Position Summary
Trinity Employment Specialists is seeking a detail-oriented Pathology Billing & Coding Specialist to join a growing healthcare organization in Tulsa. This position combines pathology coding with accounts receivable (AR) follow-up, making it ideal for an experienced medical billing professional who enjoys resolving claim issues and ensuring accurate reimbursement.
The ideal candidate will have experience with medical billing and coding, strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding, and the ability to efficiently manage aging accounts, denials, and insurance follow-up. Candidates with pathology billing experience are highly preferred.
Pathology Billing & Coding Specialist Responsibilities
Pathology Coding
- Review pathology reports and accurately assign CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes.
- Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with CMS, payer guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with pathologists and clinical staff to clarify documentation when needed.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding updates, payer regulations, and industry best practices.
- Assist in maintaining coding quality and accuracy to maximize reimbursement.
Accounts Receivable & Billing
- Work accounts receivable aging reports to identify and resolve unpaid or underpaid claims.
- Contact insurance companies regarding claim status, denials, rejections, and payment discrepancies.
- Research and resolve billing issues while documenting all follow-up activities.
- Prepare and submit claim appeals and corrected claims as necessary.
- Post payments, contractual adjustments, and other account transactions accurately.
- Monitor reimbursement trends and identify recurring denial patterns for management review.
- Collaborate with internal departments to resolve claim processing issues and improve reimbursement timelines.
- Maintain accurate documentation within the billing system and electronic health record (EHR).
- Meet productivity and quality standards while managing multiple priorities.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 12 years of medical billing and/or coding experience required.
- Previous pathology coding or pathology billing experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Experience working accounts receivable, insurance follow-up, denials, appeals, and payment posting.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and medical billing software.
- Medical coding certification (CPC, CCS, or equivalent) is a plus but not required.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
