Candidates may be hired at the Sr. Pathologists' Assistant level depending on experience and education requirements met.

- Pathologists' Assistant pay details: $42.14/hr - $65.31/hr
The Pathologists' Assistant offers a bonus up to the amount of $8,000. The Sr. PA offers a bonus up to $20,000.
Location: UPMC Hanover in Hanover, PA and approximately 5 weeks at UPMC Memorial in York for vacation coverage
Schedule: Daylight hours, generally 8 am – 4 pm with some flexibility. No on-call, nights or weekends included.
Purpose:
Assists in processing surgical pathology specimens within the laboratory from surgery. Accountable to the Pathologists on medical issues.
Responsibilities:
- Examine and prepare surgical pathology cases for microscopic evaluation by providing gross description, dissection and sections of each case as defined by the Surgical Pathology Manual while maintaining accurate records of all activities.
- Participate in and perform frozen sections / intraoperative consultations. File and retrieve surgical and cytology materials and maintain accurate records of all such activities.
- Adhere to all safety standards, policies and procedures related to the handling and disposal of specimens. Comply with universal precaution procedures. Assist with quality assurance functions as related to overall patient care.
- Remain abreast of policies, regulations, guidelines, techniques and procedures in anatomic pathology. Aid in the orientation of new technicians.
- Perform service and maintenance of various tools and equipment.
- Training provided to assist in other duties in the Histology / Cytology Lab as needed such as: cytology specimen preparation, send out case preparation, assist in slide preparation for on site adequacy assessment, CAP inspection.
Pathologists' Assistant Requirements:
- Completion of 4 year degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology or meets AAPA requirements for college credits defined in the science disciplines from an accredited institution.
- Analytical and technical ability to independently evaluate patient data and specimens.
- All procedures or job related tasks involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues. A potential for spills or splashes of biohazard substances does exist.
- Exposure to normal laboratory lights and noises and occasional exposure to toxic and carcinogenic chemicals.
Sr. Pathologists' Assistant Requirements:
- Graduate of a NAACLS accredited, Master's degree pathologist's assistant training program, or Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology or a related field and 5 years clinical experience in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology is required.
- Analytical and technical ability necessary to independently evaluate patient specimens and clinical data to appropriate sample tissue relevant to diagnostic evaluation and recognize organ and tissue anomalies.
- Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to orient and train staff as well as provide educational experiences to team members, fellows, residents and students.
