Summary/Objective: The Pathologists' Assistant performs the macroscopic description and dissection of all surgical specimens ranging from simple to complex cases including pertinent macroscopic information for the staging of complex cancer cases.

Essential Functions:

Assure appropriate specimen accessioning

Assure specimen collection and submission

Assure proper specimen handling and fixation prior to processing

Communicates with pathologists, peers both internal and external clients

Resolve specimen issues, e.g., calling hospital or physician's office personnel for clarification.

Evaluate pertinent clinical information given to determine proper specimen sampling.

Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating surgical specimens including description of the specimen, section selection for histological processing and appropriate use of protocols for printed barcoded cassettes using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment

Maintains cassette accuracy, slide filing, laboratory records, pathology equipment and logs, and assists with frozen section procedures

Prepares specimens for send-out testing, microbiology, flow cytometry or other special procedures

Resection of specimens as requested by the pathologist

Frozen Sections: verify patient information as listed on the specimen container paperwork, dissect and sample specimen, stain slide in routine Hematoxylin and Eosin

Clean area after completing each case to eliminate cross contamination

Maintaining overall cleanliness and supply inventory of the gross bench at the end of each shift

Assist with training of Grossing Technicians

Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) reviews

Assist with laboratory accreditation inspection preparations

Must work hours required for each specific location.

Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods

Follow patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science OR Master of Science degree from a NAACLS training program

PA ASCP certification

Attention to Detail - Maintains precise specimen identification, measurement, and documentation to ensure accuracy in pathology diagnoses and reporting.

Technical Expertise - Demonstrates proficiency in gross dissection, specimen evaluation, dictation, and preparation of tissue for histologic processing, including frozen sections and special studies.

Analytical Thinking - Evaluates clinical information and specimen characteristics to determine appropriate sampling methods, supporting accurate diagnostic outcomes.

Communication - Clearly and effectively communicates with pathologists, hospital personnel, and physician offices to resolve specimen discrepancies and clarify orders.

Problem Solving - Takes initiative in identifying and resolving issues related to specimen labeling, clinical data, and specimen integrity in a timely and professional manner.

Regulatory Compliance - Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols, HIPAA regulations, and guidelines for specimen handling, processing, and waste disposal.

Time Management - Efficiently manages workflow while handling multiple specimens and tasks, meeting time-sensitive demands of the laboratory environment.

Organization - Maintains a clean, structured grossing area and ensures accurate documentation and processing of specimens to support lab efficiency and prevent contamination.

Professionalism - Upholds a high level of professionalism and discretion when dealing with sensitive patient information and during communication with internal and external contacts.

Quality Focus - Contributes to consistent quality outcomes by adhering to laboratory protocols, preparing specimens thoroughly, and assisting with ongoing QA efforts.

Must obtain a minimum of 20 CEU credits per year in surgical pathology and/or other closely related subjects (i.e., Microbiology, Radiology, etc.).
