Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
Perform duties of a Pathologists' Assistant.
- Evaluate appropriateness, accurately perform grossing, and dictation requested on patient specimens.
- Utilizes time efficiently to complete assignments and assist coworkers.
- Quality control is completed and documented 100% of the time.
- Frozen sectioning is completed in a timely manner and tissue is not exhausted unless instructed to exhaust the block.
- Routine maintenance is completed and documented 100% of the time.
- Achieves section/organization quality goals.
- Compliant per personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines 100% of the time.
- Identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary with the Section Leader, or Medical Director(s) to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
- Accommodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
- Responsible for all tissue specimen releases to the patient and corresponding documentation.
- Responsible for all digital images and HIPAA storage.
- Assist Pathologists with autopsy procedure.
Document orientation, training, and education to ensure employee competence, provide excellent services, and meet accreditation requirements by effective verbal or written communication.
- Organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.
- Evidence that new procedures and major procedure revisions are read and understood.
- Assists in training new and existing staff including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill/training checklists.
- Supports the education of clinical laboratory scientist students.
Assist in preparation for and participate in inspections, proficiency testing, Quality Assurance activities, properly maintain records, prepare and update section policies and procedures to fulfill the requirements of accrediting agencies (i.e., College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) by following the provided protocol.
- Proficiency testing is completed as assigned and submitted by the deadline.
- Assists in completion of College of American Pathologists (CAP) checklist responses in preparation for on-site or self-inspection as assigned.
- Assists in review/revision of procedure manuals as assigned.
- Assists technical coordinator or section leader with problem resolution and follow up reports for proficiency tests as requested.
- Assists with the completion of quality control and Quality Assurance activities.

Education
- Bachelor of Science degree with completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) approved educational program and board certified eligible required.
OR
- Bachelor of Science degree with American Society for Clinical Pathology PA (ASCP) registration required.
Experience
- Minimum 1 year experience preferred.
License/Certifications
- Must attain and maintain American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board certification within 1 year of hire.
