Part-Time Veterinary Technician

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo currently has an opening for a part-time Licensed Veterinary Technician. Our veterinary staff consists of two veterinarians and one full-time LVT. As a valued member of the team devoted to providing optimum medical care to over 750 animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates, the technician is responsible for all aspects of patient care and and service support, ensuring patients receive efficient and quality care.

The work involves responsibility for performing duties required in carrying out medical orders as prescribed by a licensed veterinarian which require an understanding of veterinary science. The Veterinary Technician assists in the practice of veterinarian medical care of animals at the zoo including exotic and rare species. There are some physical risks involved in the work due to the nature of the animal population. The employee may have to hold, move or lift animals of up to 50 pounds weight. The work of an employee in this class must be performed under the general supervision of the general curator and licensed veterinarian. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Collects appropriate specimens and performs clinical laboratory procedures and necropsy.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Takes radiographs of animal and develops radiographic film.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Prepares and administers medications on medical orders prepared by the veterinarian.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Assists with anesthesia under the onsite supervision of the veterinarian.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Assists in surgical procedures and other medical procedures in the physical presence of the veterinarian.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Maintains complete, accurate and uptodate animal health records, necropsy reports, anesthetic records and

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

controlled substance records.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Assists in establishing a procedure for inventory control in the clinic.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Instructs animal keepers as to proper administration of medication and in the collection of fecal and urine samples.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Maintains the animal clinic in an orderly, antiseptic and neat fashion.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Sterilizes syringes, needles, surgical instruments and equipment as mandated by standard medical guidelines.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Maintains inventory, and orders and stocks supplies and equipment for the veterinary clinic.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Maintains daily telephone communication regarding new and/or ongoing cases and medications with a member of

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

veterinary staff.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

• Good knowledge of veterinary medical procedures and medical terminology.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Working knowledge of anesthesia and surgical techniques; medicines, vaccines, vitamin supplements and anthelmintics.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Working knowledge of: animal anatomy, operating equipment used in veterinary science, radiographic equipment,

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

proper machine settings and developing procedures and the techniques and procedures of positioning animals, and

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

species\ specific parasites, medications and vaccines.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Skill in handling zoo animals, both large and small species, and observing animals to determine behavioral or health

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

problems.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Ability to set up and maintain a comprehensive filing and cataloging system for animal health records.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Additional essential qualifications include: ability to monitor sounds and communicate via two way radio, ability to work

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

as a member of a team, excellent people skills, the ability to get along with a wide variety of personalities, organizational

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

skills, a high degree of independence and attention to detail, the ability to multi-task, the ability to operate a motor

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

vehicle, and the ability to maintain good communication with veterinary staff

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

At least 3 years of working in a veterinary hospital, zoological setting preferred.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

The following qualifications are mandated by Article 135 of Title 8 of the New York State Education Law, Section 6708, 6709 and 6711.4/99 REVISED

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Possession of a temporary or permanent license and current registration as an Animal Health Technician, Veterinary

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

Technician or Veterinarian from the New York State Education Department.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

• Special Necessary Requirement: Appointees to this position must possess a permanent license and current registration

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

as an Animal Health Technician, Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian from the New York State Education Department

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

prior to successful completion of the probationary period for this position.
