The First Nations Educational and Cultural Center (FNECC), established in 2007 and administered by the Office of Student Life, serves as a welcoming hub for Native American and Indigenous students at Indiana University Bloomington. As part of IUs longstanding commitment to student success, engagement, and educational excellence, the FNECC provides a supportive environment where students can build community, explore their cultural heritage, and develop meaningful connections on campus and beyond. Through cultural programs, educational initiatives, outreach efforts, and partnerships, the center promotes understanding and appreciation of Native American traditions, storytelling, and cultural practices while fostering a sense of belonging and support for students.

Job Summary

The Part-Time Assistant position will support the daily operations of the center by providing programming and outreach initiatives and assisting with administrative duties.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates, and supports cultural, educational, and community-building events that promote student engagement.
• Assists with the planning and execution of programs and special events, including Native Heritage Month, Indigenous Peoples Day, Pow Wow, workshops, and other center-sponsored activities.
• Supports event logistics by preparing, setting up, maintaining, and dismantling event spaces, equipment, furnishings, promotional materials, and supplies.
• Provides administrative support by answering and directing phone calls, greeting and assisting visitors, scheduling appointments, and responding to general inquiries.
• Serves as a resource for students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members by answering questions and sharing information about center programs, services, and events.
• Maintains records and databases; update newsletters, calendars, and communication materials; and assist with preparing promotional and educational resources for programs and workshops.

EDUCATION

Required

• Associates degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 6 months customer and/or office experience

Preferred

• Experience planning, coordinating, or supporting events, programs, or workshops.
• Knowledge of, experience with, or education related to Native American/Indigenous cultures, communities, histories, and contemporary issues.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database systems.
• Dependable, adaptable, and flexible in responding to changing priorities.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

This is a temporary position. Duration is dependent on department needs; end date to be determined.

This position is not available to undergraduate students.
