SUNY Niagara is seeking to fill a part-time Nursing Laboratory Technical Assistant position for our College of Nursing, Physical Education & Allied Health.

The Technical Assistant is responsible for the oversight and operation of all nursing laboratories and practice setups, as well as assisting nursing faculty with nursing skills and the use of laboratory equipment. This position reports to the Dean of the Nursing, Physical, and Allied Health Division.

This is a 10-month part-time position with flexible scheduling based on program needs. The position would work from late August through May of the academic year.

The rate of pay is based on the level of education the candidate possesses. For a Bachelor's degree or lower the rate of pay will be $21.86 per hour. For a Master's degree or higher the rate of pay will be $24.04 per hour.

Typical Work Activities

  • Participate in College orientation program, and be assigned a mentor.

  • Participate in the nursing laboratory activities by: Creating a clinical environment aligned with current practice seen in local healthcare agencies through the use of electronic health records and patient charts, automated medication dispensing machines, simulated medications, and other treatments pertinent to the nursing curricula

  • Assist as needed with preparing materials and nursing laboratories ahead of scheduled lab sessions

  • Assisting with nursing skills as needed by nursing laboratory faculty

  • Maintaining documentation of students' practice of skill performance and communicates with course faculty, as needed

  • Assist with the creation of electronic sign-ups for laboratory hands-on skill practice

  • Provide guidance and redirection to students reviewing hands-on laboratory skills

  • Promote student success by clarifying any concerns about laboratory skill procedure(s) used for assessing students' hands-on skill assessment(s), as needed

  • Assist with documenting student attendance, as needed

  • Assisting students in the use of laboratory equipment and computers used in the laboratory setting

  • Maintaining mannequins, cleans equipment, reports, and ensures repairs and maintenance is done as needed. Communicates with appropriate laboratory faculty about equipment-related concerns and coordinates maintenance and repair, as needed.

  • Researching, obtaining bids, and ordering supplies and equipment for use by faculty for class demonstration and all students in lab sessions.

  • Prepares budget information as requested.

  • Maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment used in nursing skills laboratories. Recommends repairs and replacement, as needed.

  • Preparing skill competency practice and assessment equipment for students returned to the lab by clinical faculty for unsafe practice.

  • Assist in the compilation of data pertinent to the Nursing Program when time permits.

  • Attend professional workshops and continuing education programs pertinent to expertise and self-development.

  • Assist with the setup and collection of SUNY Niagara Nursing Faculty Competencies and Continuing Education Points.

  • Attend lab planning sessions and other meetings as needed.

  • Participate in divisional and college committees as time permits

  • Other duties as deemed necessary by the Dean of Nursing, Physical, and Allied Health.

  • Works with lead Nursing Skills Lab TA, and Nursing Lab Coordinator as part of the Skills Lab team.

Essential Functions

Must be able to operate laboratory equipment; must be able to navigate relationships with diverse populations; must be able to operate computers and other technology pertinent to the carrying out of essential job functions; must be able to speak to groups; must be able to prepare reports and documentation required in performance of duties; must be able to physically perform the duties of the position with our without reasonable accommodation; must be able to relate to senior members of the nursing staff and administration; must be able to meet all medical requirements of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree
  • Recent experience within an office setting
  • Experience with computers and reports
  • Experience with Excel.

Desirable Qualifications

  • NYS Licensed Registerd Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Bachelors degree
  • Experience working at a community college.
  • Recent experience working in a healthcare agency or healthcare educational setting.
