Part Time Mental Health Therapist
NorthStar Counseling & Wellness is seeking graduate-level and independently licensed mental health professionals to join our growing group practice in a flexible,
part-time W-2 position with opportunities to transition into full-time employment.
This position is ideal for clinicians who are seeking a flexible part-time caseload, interested in gradually expanding their outpatient practice, or looking for an opportunity that may grow into a full-time role.
We welcome
graduate-level clinicians working toward independent licensure, clinicians approaching independent licensure, and independently licensed mental health professionals seeking a collaborative practice where they can continue to grow professionally.
This is a
hybrid position, combining in-person services at our Severna Park, Maryland office with telehealth services based on clinician availability, client needs, and applicable licensure requirements.

Position Responsibilities
Mental Health Therapists provide high-quality, ethical, and clinically appropriate behavioral health services within their professional scope of practice and level of licensure.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting clinical assessments and identifying client treatment needs
- Developing, implementing, and regularly reviewing individualized treatment plans
- Providing individual, family, couples, and/or group psychotherapy based on training, competency, licensure, and clinical experience
- Utilizing trauma-informed, person-centered, culturally responsive, and evidence-based approaches to treatment
- Monitoring client progress and adjusting treatment recommendations as clinically appropriate
- Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation within the electronic health record
- Coordinating referrals and collaborating with healthcare and community providers when appropriate
- Maintaining client confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, professional ethical standards, and applicable laws and regulations
- Participating in clinical supervision or consultation based on level of licensure
- Participating in team meetings, case consultation, and professional development activities
- Maintaining all applicable professional licenses, certifications, continuing education requirements, and professional credentials
- Working independently within professional scope while contributing to a collaborative clinical team
- Demonstrating strong clinical judgment, organization, communication, attention to detail, and follow-through
Schedule
Employment Type: Part-Time, W-2
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – Severna Park, Maryland & Telehealth
Part-time clinicians work collaboratively with NorthStar to establish a consistent schedule based on clinician availability, client demand, and practice needs.
Scheduling may include
daytime, afternoon, evening, and/or weekend availability based on clinician preference and client demand.
This position is well suited for clinicians who would like to begin with a reduced caseload and potentially
increase their hours or transition into a full-time position as their caseload and availability grow.
Clinical supervision, consultation, and required team activities are incorporated into the clinician's schedule as applicable.
Qualifications
We welcome qualified professionals from a variety of behavioral health disciplines, including
social work, professional counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and other qualifying behavioral health professions.
Applicants may qualify through either of the following pathways:
Graduate-Level Clinicians
Applicants must hold an applicable graduate degree and an
active graduate-level or provisional behavioral health license in good standing that permits the provision of psychotherapy under appropriate clinical supervision.
Qualifying credentials may include:
- LMSW
- LGPC
- Other equivalent graduate-level behavioral health credentials for which NorthStar can provide appropriate clinical supervision
Graduate-level clinicians who are actively working toward or approaching eligibility for independent clinical licensure are encouraged to apply.
Eligible graduate-level clinicians receive clinical supervision toward independent licensure at no additional cost.
Independently Licensed Clinicians
Applicants may instead hold an
active, unrestricted independent clinical behavioral health license in good standing that permits independent clinical practice in Maryland.
Qualifying credentials may include:
- LCSW-C
- LCPC
- LCMFT
- Licensed Psychologist
- Other equivalent independently practicing behavioral health credentials
Independently licensed clinicians receive ongoing opportunities for clinical case consultation, peer collaboration, professional development, and advancement within the practice.
Clinicians who hold additional licenses in Washington, D.C., Virginia, or other jurisdictions are encouraged to identify those licenses in their application.
Education
Applicants must hold the graduate or doctoral degree required for their applicable professional license, such as:
- Master's degree in Social Work, Professional Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, Psychology, or another qualifying behavioral health discipline; or
- Doctoral degree in Psychology or another qualifying behavioral health discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous psychotherapy, counseling, behavioral health, or social work experience
- Experience or interest in outpatient mental health or private practice
- Familiarity with trauma-informed, person-centered, and evidence-based treatment approaches
- Experience or interest in working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and/or families
- Strong clinical assessment, treatment planning, and documentation skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organization and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently within professional scope while collaborating with a clinical team
- Openness to supervision, consultation, feedback, and continued professional development
- Interest in developing a sustainable outpatient caseload
- Interest in potentially transitioning into a full-time role as caseload and availability grow
Compensation
NorthStar offers competitive part-time compensation based on
level of licensure, professional experience, credentials, schedule, caseload, and position responsibilities.
Part-time clinicians are employed as
W-2 employees and receive administrative, billing, scheduling, credentialing, referral, and clinical support as part of their employment.
Eligible graduate-level clinicians receive
clinical supervision toward independent licensure at no additional cost.
Compensation may increase as clinicians obtain independent licensure, increase their caseload, or transition into a full-time position.
