Description

This is a part-time position in the Adult Education and Literacy Department, requiring 20 hours per week with occasional evening hours. This position reports to the Coordinator of Literacy Services. This is a grant-funded position scheduled to end June 30, 2027. Continued employment is contingent upon continued grant funding.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Literacy Outreach Specialist supports adult learners and volunteers in the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, coordinating resources and services that promote literacy development and educational success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and pursue recruitment leads for new learners and volunteer tutors across the JWCC service area.
  • Represent the program at community events and resource fairs.
  • Distribute outreach materials to schools, libraries, employers, social service agencies, etc.
  • Prepare and deliver brief presentations or informational talks about the program.
  • Build and maintain relationships with referral partners across the service area.
  • Provide support for tutors assisting learners with basic reading, basic math, and English as a second language.
  • Check in regularly with tutors to identify any additional materials or support they may need.
  • Respond to program inquiries by phone, email, or in person.
  • Assist with collecting documentation needed for grant reporting.
  • Assist with tutor training.
  • Assist with intake, orientation, and assessment for new adult learners.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor''s degree in education or related field is preferred.

Experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, self-motivation, and computer skills required.
  • Ability to work effectively with adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and presenting to groups.
  • Teaching or tutoring experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse student populations and campus stakeholders.
  • Commitment to supporting student success and fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexible schedule within the hours of Monday-Thursday (8:00am-5:00pm) and Friday (8:00am-12:00pm)
  • Occasional evenings.

SALARY:

  • This is a non-exempt position with an estimated hourly rate of $19.00.
