College of The Albemarle invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Part-Time Program Coordinator Faculty. This position will be located at COA - Edenton-Chowan in Edenton, NC with travel to other campuses as needed.
Part-time Program Coordinator Faculty provide specialized leadership and administrative coordination for their assigned academic program while delivering high-quality instruction and supporting student success. Responsibilities may include program coordination, curriculum development and review, student advising, assessment activities, accreditation or regulatory requirements, and other activities that support continuous improvement within the academic discipline.
This is a part-time, non-benefits-eligible position. Employment is based on program and instructional needs and is contingent upon funding availability, successful completion of the colleges pre-employment process, and continued institutional need. Work schedules and instructional assignments may vary by semester or term.
Part-time Program Coordinator Faculty may be assigned courses or program responsibilities at any College of The Albemarle campus, instructional site, online, or other approved instructional location based on program needs. Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, hybrid, or online responsibilities, and travel throughout the colleges service area may be required.

Job Summary
The Fiber Optics Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, administering, instructing and evaluating the college's fiber optics workforce development programs offered through Continuing Education. This position oversees the development and delivery of courses ensuring they are in compliance with the Fiber Broadband Association's (FBA) OpTIC Path certification and college requirements.
The Fiber Optics Program Coordinator develops and maintains partnerships with the FBA, local fiber optics companies, local workforce development centers, COA staff and resources, and community stakeholders to promote a high-quality workforce development program that provides graduates access to high-demand, high-wage employment in the fiber optics industry. This position also provides instructional leadership, supports adjunct instructors and students, oversees program safety and operational compliance, and promotes continuous improvement in the fiber optics program.
The Fiber Optics Program Coordinator receives general supervision from the Dean of Workforce, Economic Development, and Public Safety.
Examples of Duties
Program Administration (30%)
Instruction and Student Support (30%)
Provide classroom, laboratory, and practical field instruction, as needed.
Advise prospective and current students regarding program requirements, certification processes, and career opportunities.
Provide academic guidance, performance coaching, remediation, and student support as appropriate.
Investigate and resolve student concerns and grievances in accordance with college policies and procedures.
Promote professional conduct, accountability, and compliance with the colleges Student Code of Conduct.
Instructor and Workforce Development (15%)
Recruit, orient, support, supervise, and evaluate adjunct instructor(s).
Identify instructor training and professional development needs.
Facilitate communication with adjunct faculty regarding college policies, instructional expectations, and program updates.
Remain current with fiber optics industry trends, instructional methodologies, FBA certification standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
Community and Agency Relations (10%)
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the FBA, local fiber optics companies, COA staff, and workforce development partners including, but not limited to, NC Works and local high schools.
Represent the College professionally at meetings, during student recruitment and instruction, and at community events
Compliance and Safety (15%)
Ensure all training activities comply with college policies and applicable federal and state regulations.
Maintain or coordinate an inventory of program equipment and supplies.
Conduct or coordinate routine inspections of training facilities, equipment, and supplies to ensure operational readiness and safety.
Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe instructional environment.
Maintain confidentiality of student and personnel information in accordance
with FERPA and other applicable laws.
Other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Required:
A high school diploma or equivalent.
A driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Three years of related experience in fiber optic cable installation or repair.
Must be able to obtain Certification as a Fiber Optic Association (FBA) instructor within three months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification as a Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) OpTIC Path Technician.
Certification as a Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) OpTIC Path Instructor
Fiber optic certifications from other professional organizations or the military.
Associate degree or higher in a related field such as communications technology, information technology, or electrical systems.
Experience in designing workforce development training classes.
Experience teaching or coaching adult learners.
Experience teaching or coaching fiber optics installers.
Note
The College will support the qualified candidate selected for this position with acquiring FBA OpTIC Path Instructor certification within their first three months.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Fiber Optic Principles: Knowledge of fiber optics principles and technologies include single-mode/multi-mode fibers, network architecture, wave theory, and data transmission.
Industry Standards: Familiarity with FBA training standards, Telecommunications Industry Association (TIE/EIA) guidelines, and OSHA safety standards.
Testing: Knowledge of how to calculate loss budgets and interpret complex testing metrics.
Skills:
Splicing and Fusion: Precision in mechanical splicing and fusion splicing.
Termination and Connections: Proficiency in stripping, cleaving, and terminating cables using varied connectors.
Diagnostic Equipment Operation: Master us of Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers, light sources, and power meters to diagnose and address transmission issues.
Instructional Delivery: Skill in scaffolding technical concepts into manageable module for adult learners.
Abilities:
Technical Translation: Ability to deconstruct abstract concepts into simple terms for students with limited or no relevant experience.
Fine Motor Coordination: Excellent hand-eye coordination and steady hand control required for handling fragile glass fibers (cladding/cores).
Visual Acuity: Strong color vision and close-range eyesight necessary to accurately identify color-coded buffer tubes and fiber ribbons.
Classroom Management: Ability to supervise high-risk laboratory environments, enforcing sharp compliance with laser safety and shard disposal protocols.
