Part-Time Faculty: PHI 191: Instructor of Philosophy - The Meaning of Life (Fall 2026)

The Philosophy Department in the College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University seeks a part-time instructor of Philosophy to teach an online asynchronous section of PHI 191, The Meaning of Life, a 3 credit course during Fall semester 2026.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department. All positions and offers are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

Course Description: Philosophical reflection on the question: what is the meaning of life. Survey of some of the most influential answers philosophers have given to this question, including god, happiness, work, action, play, mortality, and the absence of meaning.

Qualifications

• ABD or PhD in Philosophy

Job Specific Qualifications Responsibilities

• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
• Preparation of lectures.
• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meeting all designated class periods.
• Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.
• Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Providing department forms for student evaluations.
• Building a positive rapport with students, teaching assistants, and other faculty.
