Description

About Us

VCM Bookkeeping is growing and we are looking to add a part-time bookkeeper to our team. We are a small, fully remote firm based in San Francisco serving small businesses and high-net-worth individuals. Founded in 2022, the firm is led by a bookkeeper with more than a decade in bookkeeping and client service across a variety of industries.

We value integrity, attention to detail, continuous learning, and building lasting relationships with both our clients and our team. We’re serious about doing great work, but we don’t believe a professional environment has to be rigid or formal. Our team is collaborative, supportive, and down-to-earth. We enjoy working together, learning from one another, and bringing a little humor to the day while delivering exceptional service to our clients.

We believe great bookkeepers never stop learning. We encourage continuous professional development and provide opportunities to expand your skills across industries, technologies, and client engagements.

About the Role

You’ll provide hands-on bookkeeping and monthly financial reporting support for a portfolio of small business and high-net-worth clients, maintaining clean, accurate, CPA-ready financials in QuickBooks Online. You will identify issues, recommend solutions, draft clear client communications, and help improve processes as our firm grows. Precision matters: our standard is zero errors reaching CPA review.

We are looking for someone with a solid understanding of bookkeeping and accounting principles and in-depth, hands-on experience using QuickBooks Online. You should have substantial direct bookkeeping experience, rather than primarily providing tax preparation, tax planning, or higher-level accounting services. This role is ideal for someone who is comfortable independently managing bookkeeping responsibilities for multiple clients in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

The right person for this role has strong written client communication skills and prioritizes client confidentiality and discretion. You catch details that others miss, enjoy solving problems and developing new systems, and are excited about learning new technologies and industries. You’re comfortable working independently, know when to ask questions, and enjoy taking ownership of your clients’ books.

Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients in QuickBooks Online
  • Categorize transactions and reconcile bank, credit card, loan, and other balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Draft professional client emails to request information, explain issues, and answer bookkeeping questions
  • Process payroll, manage accounts payable, and prepare and file sales tax returns for applicable clients.
  • Create budgets, cash flow reports, and expense workbooks for clients as needed
  • Own one-time projects such as revising client invoicing protocol and historical cleanups
  • Review work done by junior staff, and provide constructive feedback and coaching
What We're Looking For
  • Although this is a fully remote role, you must be a resident of California or Oregon
  • 5+ years using QuickBooks Online to perform day-to-day bookkeeping, including transaction categorization, account reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Deep understanding of bookkeeping and accounting methods, including double-entry bookkeeping and both cash and accrual accounting
  • Prior experience working in a bookkeeping or accounting firm serving multiple clients is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office and Google Workspace, especially Excel and Sheets
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple clients, prioritizing competing deadlines, and following through on commitments
  • Strong written skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly and professionally to clients
  • Someone who embraces technology and enjoys learning new software
  • Experience reviewing bookkeeping work or mentoring others is a plus
  • Bonus points for experience with sales tax tracking and reporting
Schedule & Compensation
  • $37/hour
  • Fully remote W-2 position with paid sick leave and paid vacation
  • Part time, approximately 50-60 hours per month with the opportunity for additional hours as the firm grows
  • Flexible schedule: we care more about meeting deadlines and serving clients well than when you choose to complete your work
  • Occasional availability outside of standard business hours may be needed to support and train junior staff
