JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of San Luis Obispo is seeking enthusiastic, community-minded individuals to join our team as Parks Maintenance Aide I-II (Trash Collection). This role offers a great opportunity to work outdoors, support the well-being of our parks and public spaces, and make a positive impact in our community.This is a temporary, limited-benefit position with potential eligibility for limited health coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), accrued paid time off (PTO), and sick leave. The schedule for this role is Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

JOB SUMMARY:

This classification supports multiple departments within the City of San Luis Obispo. Duties are defined by the classification level and the department to which the employee is assigned. This is a part-time, temporary position and hours will vary.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, raking, and litter removal to keep parks and facilities clean and safe.
  • Assist with basic repair and upkeep of park structures, equipment, and landscaping features under general supervision.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools and light equipment while following established safety practices and procedures.

Incumbents assigned to the Trash Collection function within the Public Works Branch of the Public Works and Utilities Department will be required to perform the following duties:

  • Operate a city-owned trash truck to collect and transport trash and recyclable materials from parks and other public areas.

  • Drive and maneuver the vehicle safely while following city policies, traffic laws, and safety regulations.

  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles into the truck using hydraulic lifting equipment.

  • Work safely around pedestrians, park visitors, and other city employees while operating equipment.

  • Inspect trash and recycling containers for damage and report needed repairs or replacements.

  • Clean and sanitize trash and recycling receptacles as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • The safe operation of small power tools such as a drill/driver, trailer jacks and wheel chocks.
  • Basic janitorial duties such as cleaning toilets, disinfecting surfaces, and restocking supplies.
  • Safety procedures used in public works maintenance projects.

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions in an independent manner.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform required duties safely and effectively, including performing physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Interact with members of the public in a polite and respectful manner and understand who to direct questions to.
  • Work evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and strong attention to detail in completing assigned tasks.
  • Lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED is preferred.

For incumbents assigned to the Trash Collection function within the Public Works Branch of the Public Works and Utilities Department, familiarity with proper waste disposal and recycling procedures is preferred.

POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:

A valid California class C drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.
