The Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning invites applications for the position of Parks Groundskeeper. Incumbents are primarily responsible for maintaining County parks, grounds surrounding County Library facilities, disposal sites, recreational facilities, scenic drives, and other grounds surrounding County buildings.

Please Note: Some positions may be assigned to the American Avenue Disposal Site located in Kerman, approximately 23 miles west of Fresno. These individuals will be required to provide their own transportation to and from work (auto expenses and travel time are not covered). In addition to assignments at the American Avenue Disposal Site, these positions will also assist in seasonal landscape maintenance at closed County disposal sites.

Positions may require the ability to work overtime, weekends (including Sundays) and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of full-time, paid work experience maintaining parks, grounds, or lawns; landscaping; or farming that included planting, irrigating, and fertilizing.

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" drivers license, or equivalent.

Other: Candidates may be required to participate in the Countys Drug and Alcohol Testing Program, which includes an initial and subsequent random testing, as required by Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

  • The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months, and may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions.
  • Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.
