General Purpose

This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, security, and customer service work for the City's Paquette Ice Arena facility, including, the ice surface and refrigeration equipment, the Pro Shop, surrounding grounds and parking area and related equipment.

Pay Grade 15: $28.65 - $30.83 Hourly

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitor and adjust refrigeration plant and computer control systems.
  • Collect and secure rental revenues from Arena users as needed.
  • Open and close Arena including, but not limited to, locking/unlocking doors, ensuring appropriate equipment is operational, turning on/off lights, checking the refrigeration and ice resurfacing equipment and verifying that temporary staff are present.
  • Respond to high volume customer requests/complaints regarding ice scheduling, ice resurfacing, skate rentals and other Pro Shop retail demands, , maintenance requests and other general facility requests.
  • Respond by telephone and in person to public inquiries on Arena rules, regulations and use in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Prepare ice resurfacing machine for use by filling the water and fuel tanks, washing tires, charging batteries , connecting drag towel, etc and by performing routine vehicle maintenance to include oil changes, monthly greasing and weekly blade changes as well as other minor trouble shooting.
  • Resurface both ice surfaces by operating ice-resurfacing machine. Ensure safe and usable ice surface by proper setting of blades and proper regulation of water flow.
  • Complete ice resurfacing process within 10-minute time frame, performed once every hour during regular rink operations.
  • Perform routine ice surface maintenance to include edger, chopping corners, and shaving and flooding ice surface to ensure proper ice depth and thickness.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot compressors, chiller barrel, header pipes, ammonia detection system, dehumidifier, fire alarm system and cooling tower by changing filters, chemicals, etc.
  • Carry out routine inspections of dasherboard system; install glass and repair board system as needed.
  • Operate, maintain and program scoreboard.
  • Coordinate annual removal and reinstallation of both ice surfaces to include measuring and painting of lines and ice surface.
  • Perform general custodial duties including, but not limited to sweeping and mopping floors and bleachers, washing bath room and locker room facilities, replenishing paper supplies as needed, stripping, washing and waxing floors using wet-vac and buffer, mopping skate mats, washing windows, and dasher boards in the Arena.
  • Maintain Inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Identify repair, maintenance and improvement projects, schedule work on projects and ensure completion of projects.
  • Work as liaison with contractors completing routine repair, preventative maintenance and capital projects at the Arena.
  • Perform general plumbing, electrical and carpentry work as needed. Coordinate more complex work with Department trades staff.
  • Pick up and dispose of solid waste throughout the Arena, change trashcan liners.
  • Pick up and store all recyclable trash in accordance with Arena policies and procedures.
  • Perform tasks associated with setup/breakdown and operation of special events, daily Arena programs, meetings and athletic competitions, including high school hockey games, figure skating competitions, hockey tournaments, etc.
  • Act as sales representative in the Arena Pro Shop providing product knowledge, and pricing of inventory.
  • Act as "Ambassador" for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.
  • Carry out work in the field, and interact with the public in courteous and respectful manner, presenting self and City in a positive manner.
  • Perform blade replacements, blade sharpening and maintain skate sharpener.
  • Perform point of sale transactions using cash register/computerized inventory system.
  • Complete written forms to document time and materials used for projects, equipment and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years ice rink work experience preferred.
  • US Ice Rink Association Certified Ice Technician certification preferred
  • Ability to obtain and maintain US Ice Rink Certified Ice Technician certification required within three years of hire
  • Ability to manage seasonal rink personnel skill in workload coordination.
  • Ability to act independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to operate efficiently and make sound and immediate decisions under pressures such as equipment malfunctions, conflict of interest between Arena users, public inquiries and complaints and employee work schedule disturbances.
  • Experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Ability to operate all Arena, equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to operate point of sale system.
  • Skill in public relations, experience in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to explain and enforce rink policies and procedures.
  • The position works in both an office and Arena setting, required to work nights, holidays, and/or weekends.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work on a rotating schedule with varying hours of work on various days.
