What You'll Do:

Are you passionate about supporting children and youth with special health care needs and ensuring families have a voice in the programs and services that impact them? The Ohio Department of Health is seeking a Parent Consultant to bring valuable parent perspective to the Complex Medical Help (CMH) program and other programs serving Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN).

Key Responsibilities:

• Serve as a Parent Consultant for children, youth and young adults with special health care needs and their families, providing consultation, support, and guidance.
• Provide the parent perspective in the planning, development and implementation of programs and services for children and youth with special health care needs.
• Consult with individual parents, parent support groups, CMH staff, state and county agencies, and other partners regarding family-centered care, access to medical care, coordination of services, and other issues affecting children and families.
• Provide families with information and resources related to programs and services for which they may be eligible, including Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Women, Infants and Children (WIC), educational resources, and other family supports.
• Collaborate with administrators, health care providers, community organizations, local and health departments, children's hospitals, and state agencies to improve coordination or services and access to care.
• Support planning, coordination, implementation and continuous improvement of CYSHCN programs and services, including providing technical assistance to contractors, providers, and subrecipients.
• Develop information, educational materials, and agency communication for parents and families, including brochures, newsletters, form letters, application instructions, and information regarding services and appeal processes.
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams, planning committees, statewide workgroups, and inter-agency initiatives focused on program improvement, policy development, family-centered care and improved health outcomes for children with special health care needs.
• Coordinate and present the parent perspective at regional workshops, seminars, workgroups, and other statewide activities, and make recommendations regarding CMH and Complex Care Navigation policies.
• Support specialized pediatric initiatives, including pediatric cancer initiatives, rare disease workgroups, and other CYSHCN-related program activities.
• Travel to community organizations, agencies, workshops, meetings and other locations as required.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• 2 yrs. exp. working with advocacy groups (e.g., Cancer organizations [e.g., American Childhood Cancer Organization, Cancer Hope Network, Band of Parents, Nellie's Champions for Kids (NC4K)], Spina Bifida Coalition; Families For Acceptable Care & Treatment, The Arc) concerned with special health care needs for children with complex medical needs.

• Must provide own transportation.

• Must be parent of child with special health care needs in accordance with Federal Maternal & Child Health Bureau block grant regulations.

OR Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:

• Bachelor's or advanced degree in early childhood education, community health services, social work, public relations, clinical health

• Experience in leading and/or organizing Parent Advocacy Groups (e.g., Complex Medical Help Parent Advisory Committee, Voices for Children, Family and Children First Council), disease-specific organizations, hospital committees/councils

• Experience in assisting families to access services (e.g., medical, social)

• Experience in providing educational and/or informational trainings

• Experience in public relations or customer service

• Experience in handling confidential information

• Experience using personal computer

• Experience with public speaking and/or delivering presentations
