TITLE: Paraprofessional/Teacher Assistant (Special Education)
REQUIREMENTS:
- Fingerprint Card
- AA degree (or higher) or take and pass the Paraprofessional Examination.
REPORTS TO:
- School Principal and Director of Student Services
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The special education paraprofessional, or teacher assistant, works directly with students who have special needs to help them access learning opportunities and to support classroom management.
Duties include:
- Instructional support: Helping teachers implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and modify materials and lesson plans to meet students' needs
- Extra assistance: Providing extra support and assistance to students during lessons one-to-one or small group
- Administrative tasks: Assisting teachers with grading, recording student behavior and progress, and participating in meetings
- Daily activities: Supporting students during play, lunch, and other general activities inclass and around the school
- Safety: Ensuring student and classmate safety by being attentive, providing supervision, and de-escalating problematic behaviors
- Self-help skills: Assisting students with self-help skills and life skills (occasionally that includes assisting with toileting and feeding)
- Providing supervision on the Special Education bus to ensure safe transportation of students to and/or from school
- Other related duties as assigned by supervisor
