Job Summary
A Paramedic will provide emergency medical care and transportation for all patients encountered in the pre-hospital setting in accordance with state and regional protocols.
Duties
- Provides definitive advanced life support and transportation for all patients encountered including but not limited to BLS pre-hospital assessment, patient monitoring, dressing wounds, use of specialized equipment, etc
- Assess and treat with appropriate techniques (resources and equipment), any medical or trauma situation while maintaining the highest standard of patient care and professionalism
- Must be prepared to encounter and treat a wide range of patients according to New York State & Regional ALS and BLS protocols, but not limited to; patients with communicable diseases, violent or abusive patients, severely injured or maimed patients, patients in extreme emotional distress, etc
- Must be knowledgeable and competent in the use of medical equipment and procedures including but not limited to; defibrillation, EKG monitoring, advanced airway control, intravenous fluid and medication administration
- Must be able to provide care under Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Trauma Life Support Standards (BTLS) standards
- Provides accurate and pertinent written documentation of all patient care and EMS responses
- Must ensure ALS and BLS checklist is complete at the start of each shift and resupply stock of medical equipment throughout shift as needed in order to meet or exceed DOH, OSHA, and TONEMS standards
- Complete all documentation for each call as required by the end of your shift or in a timely manner, including but not limited to PCRs and Incident Reports
- Ensuring vehicle supplies and equipment meet TONEMS ALS standards
- Ensures Quality Assurance / Quality Improvement and documentation standards of all calls are being completed with follow-up meetings being conducted as required
- Ensures post call briefings of all calls are being completed with follow-up meetings being conducted as required
- Will assist in coaching and development of other members
- Must participate in OSHA mandated programs
- If the highest member present in chain of command, Paramedic is responsible for all crew/member concerns, situations, building/grounds and vehicle situations
- At end of shift, ensure vehicle/equipment is stocked and ready for service
- Complete all tasks assigned by Officers/Supervisors/Coordinators
- Adheres to all TONEMS policies, procedures, and the constitution
- Attends all TONEMS required trainings
- Conducts themselves as a representative of TONEMS Squad in and out of uniform while on or off shift in accordance with SOPs
Job Functions
- Provide Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support care to all patients in accordance to NYS DOH, Hudson Valley REMAC and TONEMS standards
- Adheres to NYS DOH, Hudson Valley REMAC and TONEMS CME and Skill requirements
- Safely operates all TONEMS vehicles according to the TONEMS policies and procedure and New York State Vehicle and Traffic regulations
- Must be able to communicate and work effectively with officials from various organizations
- Ensures cleanliness according to OSHA & TONEMS policies and requirements
- Understands operation & procedures of all equipment on TONEMS vehicles
- Work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather
- Communicate with other members of TONEMS and dispatch via radio while understanding TONEMS radio etiquette and channel assignments
- Must communicate information and instructions clearly and effectively in order to establish effective working relationships
- Identifies opportunities for continuous process improvement within the organization
- Must demonstrate integrity, compassion, and have a strong work ethic
- OSHA refuse disposal, including Bloodborne pathogens and HazMat
- Daily station housekeeping chores and maintenance
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Applicants must have a minimum of 1 year of experience practicing as a Paramedic, along with references.
- Must possess at time of employment and maintain a valid New York State Paramedic, ACLS, and PALS, and CPR Certifications
- Must possess at time of employment and maintain a valid, insurable New York State Driver’s license
- Must be able to communicate verbal and written thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively including but not limited to the use of radios and telephones
- Must be able to safely lift 250 lbs. as part of a 2 (two) person crew
- Hudson Valley REMAC Certification
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Remain up to date with current standards of care, including equipment functions and uses and all certifications, licenses and registrations without any disciplinary action taken against them either by New York State or a Regional EMS Organization 10. Must complete all required training to the satisfaction of their preceptor
Work Environment:
The position of Paramedic entails work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. At times the Paramedic may encounter dangerous environments, including but not limited to: toxic fumes, radiation, communicable diseases, hazardous materials or fire, violent or abusive patients. The Paramedic will take all necessary precautions to protect him/herself from injury at all times.
