Position Overview

Stand-By Personnel is seeking a dependable Packer Operator to join an industrial metal distribution and processing operation in the Verdigris/Claremore area. This position is responsible for preparing custom-cut metal products for safe shipment to industrial customers.

Unlike basic retail packaging, this is a hands-on industrial packaging and material-handling position involving aluminum extrusions, sheet metal, stainless steel bars, tubing, and other metal products. The Packer Operator ensures materials are properly inspected, protected, bundled, strapped, labeled, and prepared to prevent scratching, bending, or other damage during transportation.

The ideal candidate has previous warehouse, metal distribution, or industrial packaging experience and is comfortable working with heavy materials, banding equipment, forklifts, cranes, and precision measurements.

Required Experience & Skills

• 1+ years of warehouse packaging, metal distribution, or heavy industrial manufacturing experience preferred
• Ability to accurately read a tape measure down to 1/16 inch or decimal measurements
• Basic math and measurement skills
• Experience with industrial packaging and material preparation preferred
• Experience using pneumatic or manual banding equipment
• Familiarity with stretch wrappers and basic hand tools
• Strong attention to detail and order accuracy
• Ability to read pick tickets and customer work orders
• Ability to safely perform repetitive physical work throughout the shift
• Dependable attendance and strong work ethic
• Strong commitment to workplace safety

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Prepare custom-cut metal products for shipment
• Package aluminum extrusions, sheet metal, stainless steel bars, tubing, and related materials
• Wrap finished metal products using protective plastic or shrink wrap
• Apply corrugated cardboard or paper sheeting to protect materials during transportation
• Bundle metal products according to customer and shipping requirements
• Secure metal extrusions, tubing, and other products onto wooden skids and pallets
• Operate manual and pneumatic banding equipment
• Apply heavy-duty steel or polyester strapping
• Verify completed bundles are properly secured before shipment
• Protect products against scratches, bending, impact, and other transportation damage
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe packing and staging areas
• Perform additional packaging and material-handling duties as assigned

Order Verification Responsibilities

• Review pick tickets before packaging orders
• Verify customer work orders and special instructions
• Confirm correct alloy and material types
• Verify product dimensions and item quantities
• Review special packaging or delivery requirements
• Ensure packaged materials match applicable customer documentation
• Identify and report order discrepancies before products are released for shipment

Quality & Dimensional Inspection

• Visually inspect metal surfaces for scratches and damage
• Identify burrs or other product defects
• Verify material dimensions using tape measures or calipers
• Maintain attention to product condition throughout the packaging process
• Prevent avoidable damage during handling and shipment preparation
• Report damaged or nonconforming materials to appropriate personnel
• Ensure finished packages meet established quality requirements

Banding & Industrial Packaging

Candidates should be comfortable working with:

• Pneumatic strapping machines
• Manual banding tools
• Steel strapping
• Polyester strapping
• Stretch wrappers
• Shrink wrap
• Protective plastic
• Corrugated cardboard
• Paper sheeting
• Wooden skids and pallets
• Basic hand tools

Labeling & Documentation

• Generate and attach accurate shipping tags
• Apply barcode and identification labels
• Maintain proper heat-number identification when required
• Match material certifications to applicable products
• Verify labels and documentation are accurate before shipment
• Help maintain material traceability throughout the packaging and shipping process

Material Handling Equipment

Depending on previous experience, training, and authorization, Packer Operators may use:

• Sit-down forklifts
• Side-loaders
• Overhead cranes
• Pallet jacks
• Other industrial material-handling equipment

Previous forklift or overhead crane experience is preferred, although candidates willing to complete required training may also be considered.

• Industrial metal packaging experience
• Metal distribution or processing experience
• Experience handling aluminum extrusions, sheet metal, stainless steel, bars, or tubing
• Pneumatic banding or strapping experience
• Sit-down forklift experience
• Side-loader experience
• Overhead crane experience
• Shipping and warehouse experience
• Heat-number or material-certification experience
• Strong industrial material-handling background

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and move 50+ lbs as required
• Ability to stand and remain physically active for 8–10+ hours
• Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
• Ability to safely handle long, heavy, or awkward metal products
• Manual dexterity required for wrapping, banding, strapping, measuring, and labeling
• Ability to perform repetitive physical work throughout the shift
• Comfortable working in a heavy industrial environment
• Ability to safely operate material-handling equipment when trained and authorized

Work Environment

• Industrial metal distribution and processing environment
• Regular handling of aluminum, stainless steel, sheet metal, bars, tubing, and other metal products
• Hands-on work involving packaging, banding, strapping, inspection, labeling, and shipping preparation
• Regular interaction with forklifts, side-loaders, overhead cranes, pallet jacks, and industrial equipment
• Physically active environment requiring consistent attention to safety and product protection
• Strong emphasis on order accuracy, dimensional verification, material traceability, and proper shipment preparation
