Position Summary
The Packaging Development Manager leads and manages the design, development, and execution of customized primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions for cosmetic products.
This role ensures that packaging solutions align with customer requirements, brand identity, technical feasibility, quality standards, and production capabilities.
The Packaging Development Manager oversees the full packaging development lifecycle-from initial concept through final approval and production-while collaborating with suppliers, internal stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to deliver innovative, high-quality, and cost-effective packaging solutions.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
Project & Process Management
Lead packaging development projects from customer request through final production, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
Receive and review customer packaging requests from Marketing, verifying accuracy, completeness, and technical feasibility.
Develop detailed project timelines and retro-planning schedules in collaboration with suppliers and internal teams.
Oversee sampling requests, including color samples, customized range boards, prototypes, and other development samples.
Coordinate the development of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components in alignment with supplier capabilities and production schedules.
Ensure all packaging codification requirements are accurately completed to support packaging orders and production readiness.
Monitor project progress and proactively identify potential delays, risks, or technical challenges.
Communicate project status, timelines, and key issues to relevant stakeholders.
Technical Development & Quality Control
Finalize and release technical specifications to suppliers, ensuring Quality Control approval and production readiness.
Conduct aesthetic and dimensional evaluations of developed packaging before customer submission.
Work closely with suppliers to identify and resolve technical, quality, and production issues.
Propose practical and technically feasible alternatives when packaging challenges arise.
Partner with Quality Control, Procurement, and Production teams to ensure packaging meets performance requirements and company standards.
Ensure packaging designs and specifications are suitable for manufacturing and production.
Review packaging samples and prototypes for dimensional accuracy, appearance, functionality, and overall quality.
Support troubleshooting and corrective actions related to packaging development and production issues.
Supplier Relationship Management
Serve as the primary point of contact for packaging suppliers, managing technical discussions, development activities, negotiations, and performance reviews.
Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic packaging suppliers.
Leverage supplier capabilities and expertise to achieve optimal packaging solutions while maintaining competitive pricing and lead times.
Work with suppliers to establish realistic development and production schedules.
Monitor supplier performance and address quality, delivery, cost, and technical issues as needed.
Stay current on packaging industry trends, material innovations, manufacturing technologies, and emerging solutions.
Recommend new materials, technologies, and processes that can improve packaging performance, cost, quality, or sustainability.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Marketing, R&D, Procurement, Production, Quality, and other internal teams to ensure packaging designs meet brand, functional, technical, and manufacturing requirements.
Support artwork approval processes and collaborate with suppliers to identify technically feasible solutions to design challenges.
Translate customer and brand requirements into clear technical packaging specifications.
Facilitate communication between customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders throughout the development process.
Ensure alignment between customer expectations and supplier and manufacturing capabilities.
Participate in project meetings and provide technical guidance related to packaging development.
Continuous Improvement & Team Development
Identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, quality, and speed to market.
Evaluate existing packaging development processes and recommend opportunities for optimization.
Identify opportunities to reduce costs, improve quality, shorten development timelines, and increase operational efficiency.
Research and evaluate innovative packaging materials, technologies, and manufacturing processes.
Mentor, coach, and support the professional development of packaging team members.
Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Job Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree in Packaging, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
Experience: 5-7+ years of packaging development experience, preferably within cosmetics, personal care, beauty, or consumer goods.
Technical & Supplier Expertise: Strong knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, quality standards, and demonstrated experience managing packaging suppliers and negotiations.
Core Skills: Excellent project management, communication, problem-solving, organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
