    Summary:

    • Under the responsibility and supervision of the surgeon, will first assist in surgical procedures to treat various conditions, illness and injury including assisting in the treatment of any surgical procedures in which the supervising physician or substitute supervising physician is credentialed. This position will include but not limited to first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon.

    Responsibilities:

    • A. Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and work-up of patients 1. Confirms operating schedule and summarizes appropriate data prior to surgery. 2. Writes routine preoperative and postoperative orders if requested by surgeon. Completes informative discussion with patient and family regarding the planned procedure and hospital course. 3. Obtains patient's signature on consent form for procedures 4. Upon request from surgeon, will participate in site marking B. Assists the surgeon in each surgical procedure. 1. Appropriate prep of patient in OR 2. Performs opening and closure as per physician preference 3. Completes procedure note in patient's chart. 4. Completes postoperative orders. 5. Transfer of patient to PACU or Unit as needed C. Participates in postoperative care of patients being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications. 1. Informs the surgeon of all changes in the patient's condition. 2. Assesses the patient's postoperative course, and transcribe/implement indicated therapy as determined by surgical protocol. 3. Communicates patient progress to appropriate consultants. 4. Collects data and writes pertinent progress notes on charts. 5. Communicates with nursing staff to gather information and discuss patient care. 6. Communicates appropriate information to family members at the direction of the surgeon.
