Aquila Corporation is looking for an experienced, hands-on OSP Fiber Construction Technician to perform outside plant fiber construction across both underground and aerial environments.
This field-based position supports directional drilling, plowing, drop buries, cable placement, fiber blowing, splicing, aerial strand construction, lashing/overlashing, aerial drops, and related fiber construction activities.
If you have broad OSP fiber construction experience, can work safely and independently, and are ready to contribute with minimal training, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
- Perform underground and aerial OSP fiber construction, including directional drilling, plowing, drop buries, cable placement, fiber blowing, splicing, and aerial drops.
- Operate drop-bury plows, directional drilling equipment, and other construction equipment required to complete assigned work.
- Locate and track the drill head during directional boring operations and assist with safe bore-path execution.
- Locate and identify existing utilities before excavation, drilling, plowing, or other ground-disturbing activities.
- Operate a Hurricane fiber blower and related cable-placement equipment to install fiber and duct.
- Use 28-foot ladders, climbing gear, and gaffs to safely access and work on utility poles.
- Operate and perform work from bucket trucks in accordance with Company safety requirements.
- Build aerial strand and lash or overlash fiber cable to existing strand.
- Complete aerial and underground fiber construction in accordance with project specifications, safety requirements, and applicable NESC/RUS standards.
- Read and interpret construction prints, staking sheets, and aerial maps and accurately mark up as-builts to reflect completed field conditions.
- Maintain open communication with supervisors, crew members, customers, and other project stakeholders regarding job progress, field conditions, and issues.
- Inspect tools and equipment before use and report unsafe conditions, damage, or maintenance needs.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Relevant hands-on experience in underground construction, directional drilling, plowing, drop buries, cable placement, fiber blowing, splicing, aerial OSP construction, and aerial drops.
- Demonstrated experience completing similar fiber construction projects with the ability to contribute with minimal training.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL strongly preferred.
- Ability to meet Aquila Motor Vehicle Record and insurance requirements, as applicable.
- Strong understanding of pole loading, required clearances, and cable tensions in accordance with NESC and RUS specifications.
- Ability to read and interpret construction prints, staking sheets, and aerial maps and accurately complete as-built markups.
- Strong verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a field crew.
Additional Experience We Value
- OSHA-10 certification
- Proficiency operating Hurricane fiber blowers, directional drilling equipment, drop-bury plows, bucket trucks, and related OSP construction equipment
- Fiber splicing and testing experience
- Ability to troubleshoot field conditions and make sound decisions while maintaining safety and quality standards
