JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Clinic Manager and guided by the policies and procedures of UCSF Medical Center, Ambulatory Services, and the Department of Ophthalmology, the Orthoptist will provide patient services under direct or indirect ophthalmologist supervision. The Orthoptist will see patients under the supervision of the attending pediatric ophthalmologist and will provide patient care and technical support for pediatric ophthalmology patients, adults with binocular vision problems, eye movement disorders and strabismus, as well as optometry screening clinics.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. Qualitative and Quantitative assessment of visual acuity in pre-verbal, illiterate, literate, and non-English speaking patients.
Measure spectacle power, including prism, perform assessment of the eye alignment and detection and measurement of strabismus using both subjective and objective techniques, including but not limited to:
Cover tests
Corneal light reflex test
Diplopia tests
Tests for cyclotropia
Amblyoscope
Performs various assessments including:
Eye movements
Eye muscle function using duction and version testing
Binocular vision
Pupil and pupil responses including assessment of:
Size
Shape
Location
Direct response to light
Response to near and swinging flashlight test
Accommodation using subjective and objective techniques
Estimation of refractive error by retinoscopy
Visual Fields using confrontation techniques
Instillation of ophthalmic medications at the direction of attending ophthalmologist or optometrist
Through interpretation of test results, the orthoptist helps the ophthalmologist design a treatment plan for patient.
Under the direct/indirect supervision of an ophthalmologist, the Orthoptist designs and/or monitors a program of non-surgical treatments of:
Strabismus
Amblyopia
Disorders of binocular vision including pre- and post-operative sensorimotor evaluations
Management of diplopia including but not limited to:
Fitting of ophthalmic prisms or filters
Designing of eye exercises to improve binocular function
Recommendation
Implementation and/or modification of amblyopia therapy
Recommendation for modification of refractive correction
