Job Description

Kansas City Canine Orthopedics is seeking a fifth orthopedic

surgeon for this subspecialty orthopedic surgical practice.

What We Do

We are exclusively focused on orthopedics and sports medicine. We do arthroscopy several times every day, minimally invasive and open fracture repair, osteochondral allograft joint resurfacing, allograft tendon reconstruction and repair, synthetic joint resurfacing and commercial total hip replacement, and arthrodeses.

We also perform TPLO, CCWO, CBLO, TPLOs + internal brace, Tightropes, meniscal repair, MPL, DFO, DPO, FHO, humeral osteotomy for medial compartment disease, and complex deformity correction. Lastly, we conduct industry-sponsored clinical research with a long history of extra-mural research funding, publication, and teaching.

What We Have

We have a great team that includes 4 board-certified surgeons, one of whom is an ACVS Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery and is also boarded by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

We have extensive experience teaching/training, performing research, and publication/presentation and also have two research fellows/surgical interns (DVMs) that perform research, scrub into surgery, and supports the surgeons with patient care.

We have an additional supporting DVM that assists surgeons and staff. We have five veterinary technicians, two dedicated sterilization/pack room personnel, assistants, receptionists, and a great network of local veterinarians. We are considering adding an additional diplomate of ACVSMR.

Our Equipment

Our new hospital was designed specifically for orthopedic surgery and was completed in 2022 and then expanded in 2026. We have three operating rooms (two doubles), intra-operative imaging for minimally invasive fracture repair and to check implant placement such as with total hip replacement, and we have 3 arthroscopy towers (one for each OR).

Over 10 arthroscopes including two 1.9s, 2.3, 2.5, six 2.7 shorts, 2.7 long, the Arthrex Nanoscope, and all associated arthroscopic instrumentation, cameras, and positioners. We have bone plating systems including VetKiss, VOI, and Arthrex Ortholine and our TPLO systems include both VOI and Arthrex TPLO systems. We do Kyon (Zurich) THRs. We have the skill set to do Arthrex CUEs and have SynACART instrumentation.

Both circular and linear IMEX ESF instrumentation. We are installing a new (not refurbished) Fuji Supria CT and we use open-source software to assess deformities and perform virtual surgical planning. We can also design guides but if you'd rather send the CT out for a guide and custom implant creation that is also easy to do. We don't have a 3D printer in house at the moment but we have performed 3D printing previously, have that expertise, and so we can add that for the motivated surgeon (or we will make that priority of our next research fellow).

We also have centrifuges and equipment for preparation, aliquoting and appropriate storage of, and activation of platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate, BMP, and we do also perform other biologic treatments such as cultured stem cell applications. We have a GaitIV pressure sensitive walkway that we use for research and clinical patients to assist with diagnosis or document their progress. We have extra corporeal shockwave and will add ultrasound if we add a diplomate of ACVSMR.

Qualifications

• Board-certified in surgery, or at least have completed residency training and are in pursuit of board-certification.
• Proficient in arthroscopy, but we are also interested in applicants that are committed to becoming proficient in arthroscopy.
• Perform TPLO, MPL correction, FHO, and fracture repair. Additional skills beyond this are desirable, but can be developed.

Schedule and Terms

• The chosen surgeon can be full time or part time with numerous potential schedules available, including ranging from 2-5 days per week, but the standard schedule is currently 4 days per week.
• There is no soft tissue surgery to be performed, no evening or weekend duty and no on-call. The position provides the opportunity to be involved in research if you want, but that is not required.
