ASRC Federal System Solutions (AFSS) is seeking a ORION Spacecraft Technician Machinist, Senior at Kennedy Space Center, FL.

Job Summary:

The Spacecraft Technician Machinist, Senior will be responsible for programming, setup, and operation of CNC (3‑/4‑axis mills, 2‑axis turn center) and manual machine tools to fabricate precision parts for Orion Multi‑Purpose Crew Vehicles, the crewed spacecraft destined for the Moon and Mars. The ideal candidate brings extensive manual‑ and CNC‑machining experience, expert‑level MasterCAM programming, proven tool‑selection and custom fixturing skills, and strong inspection abilities using micrometers, calipers, and bore mics (digital and analog). Blueprint/GD&T interpretation, meticulous documentation, and a continuous‑improvement mindset are essential to achieve program goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program, Setup, and Operate CNC Equipment (HAAS)- Develop, edit, and verify MasterCAM programs using engineer provided CAD model and print for 3-/4-axis mills and 2-axis turning center
  • Manual Machine Tool Expertise- Set up and run vertical knee mills (Bridgeport), engine lathes, drill presses, band saws, bench grinders, metal shears, and other standard machine shop equipment
  • Tooling & Work-Holding Optimization - Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts and fixturing; ability to design and fabricate custom fixtures as needed
  • Blueprint & GD&T Interpretation- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T specifications to meet exacting aerospace standards
  • Inspection- Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, OD, ID, and Depth Micrometers to do floor inspection of parts
  • Continuous Improvement- Evaluate process performance to propose tooling or workflow enhancements
  • Documentation & Reporting - Complete work orders and program documentation in both paper and digital formats to maintain traceability for aerospace compliance
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow established safety protocols and standard operating procedures

Requirements:

  • Proficient in programming, setup, and operation of CNC machines to include 3 and 4-axis mills and 2- axis turning center, utilizing CAD/CAM software (5-axis knowledge is a plus)
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM software (MasterCAM experience highly preferred)
  • Proficient in the set up and operation of manual machine tools to include vertical knee mill (Bridgeport), engine lathe, drill press, band saw, metal shear, and other tools common to a machine shop.
  • Proficient using precision measuring tools (digital and analog) such as calipers, micrometers, bore mics, etc. for part inspections
  • Proficient in interpreting complex engineering prints with a thorough understanding of GD&T
  • Creative problem solver- no single approach fits every machining challenge
  • Ability to safely complete all physical activities required in a manufacturing environment
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of CNC experience (programming, set-up, operator)
  • Skilled trade/technical certification - (CNC machining/ Toolmaker - Preferred)
