OR Circulator RN – Ambulatory Surgery Center

Danbury, CT | $49–$51/hr | 6-Month Contract

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced OR Circulator Registered Nurse for a fast-paced, freestanding Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) in Danbury, CT. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced perioperative RN looking for a consistent daytime schedule with no call, no weekends, and no mandatory overtime.

The RN will work closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other members of the healthcare team to provide safe, efficient, high-quality perioperative care.

The center is approximately 80% orthopaedics, with a high volume of total joint replacement procedures. Total joint experience is a strong plus.

Scrub experience is preferred but not required. Candidates may work strictly as OR Circulators.

Assignment Details

Pay: $49–$51/hour
Start Date: ASAP
Assignment Length: Approximately 6 months
Hours: 30–40 hours per week
Schedule: 3 or 4 ten-hour shifts
Shift: 6:30 AM–4:30 PM
Days: Rotating Mondays or Fridays off
Call: None
Weekends: None
Mandatory Overtime: None

• Orthopaedics / Total Joint Replacements – approximately 80% of cases
• Spine
• ENT
• Plastics
• Urology

Key Responsibilities

OR Circulator & Perioperative Nursing

• Function as the RN Circulator during surgical procedures.
• Provide comprehensive nursing care throughout the perioperative period.
• Assess patients' physical and psychological condition prior to surgery.
• Verify patient identity, surgical procedure, consent, allergies, NPO status, vital signs, and relevant medical information.
• Review laboratory, diagnostic, and radiology results and communicate abnormalities appropriately.
• Develop and implement individualized perioperative patient care plans.
• Safely position patients to prevent skin, neurological, or vascular injury.
• Monitor patients throughout procedures and recognize changes requiring nursing intervention.
• Coordinate supplies, equipment, medications, and resources required for surgical procedures.
• Anticipate surgical team needs using surgeon preference cards and established protocols.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Coordinate communication between the surgical team and other departments.
• Assist with safe patient transfers and transportation.

Surgical Safety & Infection Prevention

• Maintain a safe and appropriate operating room environment.
• Follow aseptic technique and established infection-control standards.
• Establish and maintain the sterile field as appropriate.
• Identify and immediately address breaks in sterile technique.
• Inspect sterile supplies for package integrity, expiration dates, and sterility indicators.
• Perform and document sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to facility policy.
• Take immediate corrective action when counts are incorrect.
• Ensure surgical equipment and supplies are available and functioning properly.
• Follow applicable AORN recommendations, OSHA standards, Universal Precautions, and facility policies.
• Follow established protocols related to infection control and malignant hyperthermia (MH).
• Properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Medications & Patient Monitoring

• Administer medications and solutions in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, and applicable regulations.
• Monitor vital signs, physical symptoms, behavioral changes, intake/output, and other relevant physiological data.
• Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly.
• Document medication administration, patient responses, and nursing interventions appropriately.

Patient Advocacy & Education

• Serve as a patient advocate throughout the surgical experience.
• Protect patient privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and rights.
• Participate in preoperative and postoperative patient and family education.
• Explain the surgical environment and procedures as appropriate.
• Document patient education and understanding in the medical record.

Teamwork & Professional Responsibilities

• Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
• Demonstrate flexibility in meeting operational and patient-care needs in a fast-paced ASC environment.
• Maintain professional and effective relationships with patients, families, physicians, visitors, and coworkers.
• Participate in quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives.
• Maintain required certifications and facility competencies.
• Practice within applicable ethical, legal, regulatory, and professional nursing standards.

Requirements

• Active Connecticut Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Minimum 1 year of operating room experience
• Strong OR Circulator experience
• Current BLS certification
• Current ACLS certification
• Current PALS certification
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced Ambulatory Surgery Center environment
• Knowledge of sterile technique and surgical infection-control practices
• Knowledge of malignant hyperthermia (MH) protocols
• Understanding of applicable regulatory and patient-safety requirements
• Strong communication, organizational, and prioritization skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the surgical team
• Ability to remain calm and effective in a high-volume surgical environment
• Total joint replacement experience is a strong plus
• Scrub experience is preferred but not required

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
• Ability to assist with lifting, transferring, and transporting patients.
• Ability to lift and handle surgical instrument trays and equipment weighing approximately 40 pounds.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to operate surgical equipment and handle instrumentation.
• Ability to hear and understand verbal instructions in a surgical environment.
• Near vision sufficient to accurately identify surgical supplies and instrumentation.
