Bloom Family Eye Surgeons through its owned and affiliated practices is a leading provider of comprehensive medical and surgical eye clinic in Dayton, Ohio. As a physician-led and physician-owned practice, we offer complete medical eye examinations by specialists in the field of ophthalmology, including the diagnosis, management and treatment of eye diseases.
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated, friendly, and customer-focused individual to join our Bloom Optical team and play an important role in providing an exceptional patient experience. As part of our optical department, you will assist patients with their eyewear and vision needs while working in a fast-paced medical eye care and retail environment.
Our optical team offers a full-service selection of eyeglasses, sunglasses, lenses, and contact lens products to meet the diverse visual needs of our patients. Whether you are new to the optical field or have previous experience, this position provides an opportunity to learn, grow, and build a career in optical.
Prior optical experience is preferred. We are willing to train the right candidate who is dependable, motivated, eager to learn, and committed to providing excellent patient care and customer service.
This position also offers the opportunity to earn additional income through a sales commission program based on individual and/or optical department performance.
Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, professional, and personalized service to patients throughout their optical experience
- Assist patients with selecting frames, sunglasses, lenses, and other optical products based on their prescription, lifestyle, visual needs, and personal preferences
- Educate patients on lens options, coatings, eyewear products, and available optical services
- Accurately read and transpose prescriptions and ensure orders are processed correctly
- Assist with optical measurements and eyewear fitting as training and experience develop
- Perform basic eyewear adjustments and repairs
- Assist patients with contact lens products and provide education and training as appropriate
- Verify vision insurance benefits and assist patients with understanding coverage and out-of-pocket costs
- Process optical sales and transactions using the practice's point-of-sale (POS) system
- Assist with optical orders and communicate with optical laboratories and vendors as needed
- Maintain accurate patient and order information
- Assist with optical inventory, including frames, lenses, contact lenses, and supplies
- Work collaboratively with physicians, clinical staff, and other members of the optical team to support excellent patient care
- Support other areas of the practice as needed to promote teamwork and a positive patient experience
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming optical environment
- Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA and practice policies
- Regular and reliable attendance, including the ability to work a full-time schedule, is an essential function of this position.
- Ability to float between our area office locations
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will:
- Have strong customer service and communication skills
- Be comfortable working in both a retail and healthcare environment
- Demonstrate a knowledge of or willingness to learn optical products, insurance processes, and patient care
- Be dependable, detail-oriented, and motivated to grow professionally
- Have the ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and manage time effectively
- Be comfortable working with computers and learning new software and technology
- Have a positive attitude and a team-oriented approach
- Be committed to providing an outstanding patient experience
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Previous experience in optical, ophthalmology, optometry, healthcare, retail, sales, or customer service
- Experience with vision insurance verification and patient cost estimates
- Experience with optical measurements, lensometers, or pupilometers
- Knowledge of contact lens products and patient education
- Experience with optical software or electronic health record systems; NextGen experience is a plus
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Optical certification or licensure is a plus but not required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This role requires a variety of physical activities to successfully perform essential job duties.
- The position involves frequent walking (up to 75%), as well as regular sitting (up to 50%) and standing (up to 50%). The employee will also need to bend, stoop, and reach regularly (approximately 25–50% of the time).
- The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 pounds is required. Strong fine motor skills and full use of both hands are essential, as the role involves frequent grasping, writing/typing, and use of computers and other technology.
