Optical Metrology Engineer

 Payrate: $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
 
Responsibilities:

• Operate optical metrology and inspection equipment on waveguide samples, including interferometry for surface figure and wedge, optical profilometry for thickness and roughness, non-contact thickness measurement, and polarization-based imaging for defect and contamination inspection.
• Follow and improve standard operating procedures, measurement plans, and sampling definitions, maintaining rigorous traceability between samples, measurements, and results.
• Process raw measurement data using established automated pipelines and analysis scripts, applying engineering judgment where automated processing requires review or parameter adjustment.
• Analyze trends across builds and designs, identify outlier samples, and drive root-cause investigation of anomalous results.
• Correlate internal measurement results against supplier data, reconcile discrepancies, and help maintain measurement agreement across sites.
• Connect structural and dimensional measurement data to optical performance and observed display artifacts.
• Present and defend measurement results and interpretations in technical reviews, and document findings so that learnings are captured and reusable.
• Serve as the responsible owner for assigned instruments, including calibration, routine maintenance, uptime, and measurement capability.
• Contribute to improving measurement automation, data infrastructure, and reporting so that analysis scales as build volume grows.
• Handle delicate, high-value optical components with appropriate contamination control and care.

 
Minimum qualifications:

• BS in Optical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
• Familiarity with working in an optical lab environment, including hands-on experience with optical benches, alignment, light sources and detectors, and the handling, cleaning, and contamination-control practices that optical components require.
• Experience with at least one of the following: interferometry, optical profilometry, surface figure or flatness measurement, thin film or thickness metrology, or microscopy-based inspection.
• Proficiency in Python and other software such as JMP for data processing and analysis, including the ability to read, run, modify, and debug existing analysis scripts.
• Experience interpreting measurement data, identifying outliers, and communicating technical findings clearly in writing and in technical discussions.
• Demonstrated attention to detail and consistency in following documented procedures and data conventions.

 
Preferred qualifications:

• MS in Optics, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
• Experience with interferometers, confocal or white-light optical profilometers, optical coherence or spectral-domain thickness measurement, or cross-polarization imaging.
• Experience with thin films, optical coatings, bonded optical assemblies, or display optics.
• Experience with Gauge R&R, measurement systems analysis, statistical process control, or related measurement capability methodology.
• Experience building or maintaining automated data pipelines, databases, or dashboards for measurement and test data.
• Experience collaborating with external suppliers on measurement correlation and incoming quality data.
• Experience authoring technical procedures or training and qualifying other operators.

 
Pay Transparency:  The typical base pay for this role across the U.S. is: $60.00 - $70.00/hour.
