Ophthalmic Technician

Join UPMC Vision Institute as an Ophthalmic Technician supporting our busy ophthalmology practice at 1622 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This Monday through Friday daylight position offers hours between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with start times varying based on clinic schedules, and provides the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care. In this role, you will perform comprehensive patient workups, including refractions, assist with injection preparation, and support physicians and clinical staff throughout the patient visit. You will also play a key role in ophthalmic diagnostic testing and imaging, including OCT, fundus photography, corneal topography, A-scans, and visual field testing. Candidates will gain exposure to a wide range of ophthalmic specialties while contributing to an outstanding patient experience. Occasional travel (approximately 5% to other UPMC Vision Institute locations may be required to support operational and staffing needs. Responsibilities:

• History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
• Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
• Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
• Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
