QUALIFICATIONS

Experience, License and Certification: Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey driver's license. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B is required.  CDL Class A is preferred.   

 

Operator/Driver I - Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in collection system operations and maintenance is required.  A New Jersey Collection System C2 license is required (or must be actively pursuing a C2 License*).  A Wastewater Treatment S1 license is preferred.  A NJDOT Certified Traffic Control Coordinator certification is required. 

*Actively pursuing is defined as taking the associated State license exam at least two (2) times per year until the license is obtained.  

 

Operator/Driver II - Minimum of six (6) years of experience in collection system operations and maintenance is required.  A New Jersey Collection System C1 license is required (or must be actively pursuing a C1 License*). A Wastewater Treatment S1 license is preferred.  A NJDOT Certified Traffic Control Coordinator certification is required. 

*Actively pursuing is defined as taking the associated State license exam at least two (2) times per year until the license is obtained.  

 

Operator/Driver III - Minimum of five (5) years of experience in collection system operations and maintenance is required.  A New Jersey Collection System C1 license is required (or must be actively pursuing a C1 License*). A Wastewater Treatment S1 license is preferred. A NJDOT Certified Traffic Control Coordinator certification is preferred.

Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. This includes, but is not limited to, physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body such as climbing (including ladders), kneeling, sitting, standing, working from elevated areas, lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping, handling heavy objects, carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling, manual dexterity, using a keyboard, and minor use of tools, as well as visual acuity, hearing and speaking. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks as well as Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).    

RESPONSIBILITIES

Requirements:

Must have knowledge of the principles and methods used in the conveyance of wastewater, as well as comprehend the related laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the conveyance of wastewater and combined sewer overflows.  Must understand both the occupational hazards involved in, along with the safety precautions that need to be exercised in, the conveyance of wastewater.  Must be able to retain technical information. Mechanical and problem-solving aptitude, as well as computer literacy, are required. Must be able to read, write, communicate, and understand English sufficiently to perform the functions of the position and execute verbal and written directions.

Working Conditions:

Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors. Must be available for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis.

Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.4 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd

 

Position Summary: 

Responsible for driving and operating various Line Operations Department vehicles as well as maintaining and operating the component parts of the collection system.
