Purpose Statement

The Operations Manager Transportation assists the Director of Transportation in managing the daily operations of the Transportation Department. This position provides leadership and support to transportation staff, coordinates daily operational activities, ensures compliance with district, state, and federal transportation requirements, and promotes safe and efficient transportation services for students. The Operations Manager supports special education transportation services, staff development, budget management, and continuous improvement efforts within the department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Transportation with the daily operation and management of the Transportation Department
  • Supervise Routers/Dispatchers and support daily route assignments to ensure adequate staffing and efficient transportation operations
  • Assist in resolving concerns involving bus drivers and monitors by clarifying issues, recommending solutions, and ensuring student safety
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, parents, district staff, building personnel, and department leadership to resolve concerns and provide support
  • Drive or monitor transportation routes as needed to ensure effective dispatching practices, accuracy, and safety
  • Monitor department budget activities and assist with purchasing and management of specialized transportation equipment
  • Organize and implement specialized training for drivers and monitors related to safety, student needs, and transportation procedures
  • Develop and coordinate employee recognition efforts to promote teamwork and positive staff engagement
  • Prepare special education and early childhood mileage, ridership, and billing reports
  • Respond to transportation-related questions and concerns from families and staff while providing timely follow-up and resolution
  • Attend IEP meetings to identify student transportation needs and support implementation of required accommodations and strategies
  • Monitor and support compliance with transportation accommodations outlined in student IEPs
  • Ensure transportation operations align with district policies and applicable state and federal guidelines
  • Support a positive work environment through effective leadership, communication, and collaboration
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job Requirements / Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in student transportation with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Knowledge of transportation safety practices, procedures, and applicable regulations
  • Experience supervising and supporting transportation personnel preferred
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and collaborate with a diverse group of employees
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to analyze situations, develop solutions, and make independent decisions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive student information
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with families, staff, and community members
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Experience working with special education transportation needs preferred

  • Transportation department setting with regular collaboration among district staff, schools, families, and transportation employees
  • Frequent communication with drivers, monitors, dispatchers, administrators, and community members

Education and Experience

Required:

Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility in the transportation field

Preferred:

Associate degree or related post-secondary education
