    What you'll do:

    The Operations Manager is responsible for leading daily branch operations across warehouse, yard, inventory, shipping and receiving, delivery and dispatch, fleet, and related operational functions to ensure a safe, efficient, organized, and customer-focused operation. This role provides leadership to operational teams while coordinating staffing, inventory flow, equipment, facilities, delivery schedules, and customer fulfillment.

    In addition to overall operational leadership, the Operations Manager directly coordinates daily dispatch activities, including scheduling deliveries, assigning drivers and equipment, preparing next-day delivery plans, and ensuring customer orders are properly staged and loaded. Working closely with Sales, Inside Sales, Counter Sales, Purchasing, Warehouse, Drivers, and branch leadership, this role ensures customer commitments are met while maintaining high standards for safety, inventory accuracy, productivity, and service.

    Operations Management

    • Lead daily branch operations to ensure teams are prepared to safely and efficiently support customers
    • Oversee warehouse, yard, shipping, receiving, delivery, and other assigned operational functions
    • Provide operational oversight and support to Inside Sales, Counter Sales, and other assigned branch personnel
    • Establish daily priorities and allocate staffing, equipment, and resources based on customer and business needs
    • Conduct routine operational walkthroughs to verify department readiness, housekeeping, inventory organization, equipment condition, and safety
    • Monitor operational performance and proactively address issues that could impact customers or productivity
    • Coordinate activities across departments to maintain efficient workflow and customer service
    • Serve as a key operational resource for employees and customers

    Delivery Scheduling and Dispatch

    • Own and coordinate daily delivery and pickup schedules for assigned customers and delivery areas
    • Plan, organize, and assign Drivers, Helpers, trucks, forklifts, and other delivery resources to maximize efficiency
    • Review customer delivery requirements, jobsite conditions, order priorities, route considerations, and equipment needs when developing schedules
    • Prepare next-day delivery plans and communicate assignments to Warehouse, Drivers, and Operations teams
    • Coordinate first-run, second-run, and priority deliveries based on customer requirements and operational capacity
    • Develop efficient delivery routes based on geography, customer requirements, equipment availability, and scheduled delivery windows
    • Monitor daily delivery activity and adjust schedules in response to traffic, weather, customer changes, equipment issues, or other operating conditions
    • Maintain regular communication with Drivers and internal teams regarding delivery status and schedule changes
    • Communicate delays or service concerns promptly to customers and appropriate internal partners

    Load and Warehouse Coordination

    • Ensure customer orders are accurately picked, staged, verified, and prepared for scheduled deliveries
    • Coordinate with Warehouse personnel to ensure next-day orders and priority loads are completed on time
    • Distribute work assignments to forklift operators and other personnel supporting delivery preparation
    • Communicate delivery plans, load priorities, route sequencing, and equipment requirements to Warehouse and Operations teams
    • Verify delivery schedules are aligned with available trucks, Drivers, Helpers, forklifts, and other resources
    • Ensure vehicles are loaded safely and appropriately for scheduled delivery sequences
    • Assist with resolving missing materials, incomplete loads, damaged products, or other issues that could affect deliveries
    • Provide hands-on warehouse and material-handling support when necessary

    Warehouse and Yard Operations

    • Lead warehouse and yard activities to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient material flow
    • Oversee picking, staging, stocking, receiving, loading, and movement of building materials
    • Ensure warehouse, yard, loading, staging, and storage areas remain clean, organized, accessible, and safe
    • Coordinate placement of incoming inventory and optimize storage locations to improve workflow and space utilization
    • Ensure materials remain properly identified, stored, and in sellable condition
    • Resolve operational issues affecting customer orders and material availability
    • Maintain high standards for housekeeping, security, and organization

    Inventory Management

    • Monitor inventory accuracy and support effective inventory-control processes
    • Coordinate cycle counts, physical inventories, inventory reconciliation, and related activities
    • Investigate inventory discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions
    • Partner with Purchasing and Sales to maintain appropriate product availability
    • Ensure incoming materials are accurately received, counted, inspected, and stored
    • Coordinate placement and relocation of inventory to maximize warehouse efficiency
    • Maintain accurate inventory and operational documentation
    • Support seasonal, storm-related, and changing inventory requirements

    Fleet and Equipment Coordination

    • Ensure safe, reliable trucks, forklifts, and other operational equipment are available to support daily delivery and warehouse requirements
    • Schedule vehicles, forklifts, and equipment for routine maintenance and service
    • Coordinate road service, tire service, forklift maintenance, and other equipment repairs
    • Monitor equipment condition and ensure unsafe or damaged equipment is removed from service when appropriate
    • Communicate equipment outages and adjust delivery or operational plans accordingly
    • Coordinate with internal Maintenance teams, vendors, and service providers to minimize downtime
    • Support routine vehicle and equipment inspections
    • Monitor equipment availability and utilization to minimize disruption to customer deliveries

    Team Leadership and Employee Development

    • Lead, coach, develop, and support Warehouse, Yard, Shipping, Receiving, Delivery, and other assigned branch employees
    • Establish clear expectations for safety, productivity, customer service, and accountability
    • Coordinate staffing schedules based on operational and delivery requirements
    • Assign daily responsibilities and adjust resources as workload changes
    • Review and approve employee timekeeping and attendance records as assigned
    • Conduct team meetings and communicate operational priorities and business updates
    • Provide timely coaching and feedback to improve performance
    • Support onboarding, training, cross-training, and employee development
    • Foster a professional, collaborative, accountable, and customer-focused work environment

    Customer and Cross Functional Support

    • Partner closely with Sales, Inside Sales, Counter Sales, Purchasing, Warehouse, Drivers, and branch leadership
    • Serve as an escalation point for delivery, material, fulfillment, and operational concerns
    • Coordinate communication between customers, Sales, Warehouse, and Drivers regarding delivery requirements
    • Resolve customer concerns promptly while maintaining company service standards
    • Maintain professional relationships with customers, vendors, service providers, and internal partners
    • Support customer fulfillment from order preparation through final delivery

    Safety and Transportation Compliance

    • Promote and maintain a safety-first culture across all operational and transportation activities
    • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, OSHA requirements, applicable DOT requirements, PPE standards, and transportation procedures
    • Ensure truck loads comply with applicable weight, securement, and transportation requirements
    • Conduct routine inspections of warehouse, yard, loading areas, vehicles, equipment, and surrounding property
    • Ensure employees are properly trained and authorized before operating forklifts or other equipment
    • Maintain required safety, vehicle, and operational documentation
    • Report and respond appropriately to accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and unsafe conditions

    Operational Planning and Continuous Improvement

    • Develop, implement, and improve warehouse, dispatch, delivery, and operational procedures
    • Identify opportunities to improve route efficiency, delivery performance, productivity, inventory accuracy, safety, and customer satisfaction
    • Establish standardized workflows and operational best practices
    • Monitor operational performance and recommend corrective actions when expectations are not met
    • Anticipate potential operational risks and proactively develop solutions
    • Support implementation of new systems, technology, equipment, and processes
    • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned

    Required Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in building materials, warehouse operations, distribution, logistics, transportation, or a related environment
    • Previous leadership or supervisory experience
    • Experience managing warehouse workflow, inventory, shipping and receiving, and material handling
    • Previous experience coordinating delivery schedules, Drivers, equipment, or transportation operations
    • Knowledge of the local delivery area
    • Working knowledge of applicable DOT and transportation safety requirements
    • Basic proficiency with computers, inventory systems, and business applications

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 10 or more years of building materials or related industry experience preferred
    • Experience within wholesale building materials, lumber, construction supply, or distribution strongly preferred
    • Previous dispatching, logistics, transportation, or fleet-coordination experience
    • Experience leading multi-functional branch operations
    • Knowledge of interior building materials, including drywall, metal framing, acoustical products, and related materials, where applicable
    • Previous commercial driving experience is a plus
    • Forklift certification or material-handling equipment experience preferred
    • Experience with dispatch, routing, GPS, ERP, WMS, or transportation-management systems
    • Experience with Lean, 5S, continuous improvement, or standardized work practices is a plus

    Certifications

    • Valid driver's license required where operation of company vehicles is necessary
    • CDL Class A and current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate may be required based on location and operational responsibilities
    • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification may be required

    Work Environment and Requirements

    • Work is performed across office, warehouse, yard, loading, delivery, and outdoor environments
    • Frequent interaction with employees, customers, Drivers, vendors, and management
    • Significant time may be spent coordinating schedules, routes, and operational activities from an office or dispatch environment
    • Ability to sit for extended periods while performing dispatch and administrative responsibilities
    • Ability to stand and walk throughout warehouse, yard, and loading areas
    • Ability to bend, reach, climb, stoop, and perform physical operational activities as required
    • Ability to occasionally assist with warehouse activities and lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier materials should be handled using team assistance or appropriate mechanical equipment
    • Exposure to forklifts, trucks, building materials, warehouse equipment, noise, dust, and varying temperatures
    • Required PPE must be worn in designated operational areas
    • Early mornings, extended hours, overtime, or weekends may be required based on delivery schedules and operational needs
