Position Summary

The Operations Manager is responsible for leading daily manufacturing operations at Hardide Coatings in Danville, Virginia. This position is accountable for operational performance across safety, quality, delivery, cost, productivity, workforce development, and continuous improvement. The role provides leadership to production, maintenance, and operational support teams while partnering with Quality, Engineering, Supply Chain, and senior leadership to achieve business objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Leadership
  • Direct day-to-day manufacturing operations to meet production schedules, customer commitments, safety objectives, and quality requirements.
  • Establish clear expectations for supervisors, technicians, and production employees to ensure consistent execution across shifts and work areas.
  • Monitor operational KPIs, identify performance gaps, and lead corrective action plans to improve results.
  • Coordinate resources, staffing, equipment, and materials to support production requirements and business priorities.
People Leadership and Workforce Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop supervisors and frontline team members.
  • Support performance management, employee engagement, training, retention, and succession planning activities.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, respect, communication, teamwork, and continuous learning.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and reinforce expectations for safety, quality, productivity, and professionalism.
Safety, Quality, and Compliance
  • Champion a safety-first operating culture and ensure adherence to company policies, OSHA requirements, and environmental standards.
  • Partner with Quality to ensure products and processes meet customer specifications and internal standards.
  • Support incident investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
  • Ensure operational discipline, documentation accuracy, and compliance with established procedures.
Continuous Improvement and Process Optimization
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, 5S, Kaizen, standard work, visual management, and root-cause problem solving.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, throughput, equipment utilization, labor productivity, quality, and cost performance.
  • Support automation, process improvement, and capital improvement initiatives as appropriate.
  • Use data to evaluate operational trends, prioritize improvements, and communicate progress to leadership.
Financial and Strategic Management
  • Manage operational budgets, labor utilization, overtime, productivity initiatives, and cost control activities.
  • Provide operational reporting, analysis, and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Support long-range planning, capacity planning, and growth initiatives for the Danville operation.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions that strengthen operational performance and Hardide Coatings' competitive position.

Minimum Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations Management, Business, Manufacturing, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing leadership experience.
  • Experience managing supervisors, technicians, and production employees.
  • Working knowledge of safety, quality, production, maintenance, and inventory management practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve operational performance and build effective teams.
Preferred
  • Lean Manufacturing certification or demonstrated Lean implementation experience.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or higher.
  • Experience in coatings, metals, aerospace, specialty chemicals, advanced manufacturing, or industrial manufacturing.
  • ERP, MRP, or manufacturing systems experience.
  • Experience supporting capital projects, automation, or facility growth initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, coaching, conflict resolution, and employee development skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with frontline employees, supervisors, technical teams, and senior leadership.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen, standard work, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Ability to manage budgets, labor utilization, productivity, and operational performance metrics.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, accountability, and operational discipline.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands-on, fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Manufacturing facility and office environment with regular presence on the production floor.
  • May require exposure to manufacturing equipment, chemicals, materials, heat, noise, and PPE-controlled areas.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility as needed to support operations.
  • Must follow all safety policies, PPE requirements, and site procedures.
