Our client is seeking a driven and experienced General Manager to oversee the daily operations of their building equipment business. This position is responsible for ensuring the company operates efficiently across sales, service, warehouse, administration, inventory, and team management functions. The successful candidate will work closely with department leaders to establish goals, monitor performance, and make decisions that support continued growth and profitability.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the building equipment sector, proven leadership ability, and the confidence to make sound business decisions. They should be highly organized, results-focused, and capable of building trusted relationships with customers, suppliers, and employees.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

The General Manager will be responsible for achieving revenue and profitability goals. This includes reviewing financial reports, overseeing budgets, managing costs, and identifying opportunities to improve margins. Regular reporting of financial performance to ownership or the executive team will also be required.

Team Development

This role will involve hiring, training, and developing employees across the organization. The General Manager will be expected to foster a positive, productive workplace where team members feel supported and motivated. Conducting regular performance reviews and providing ongoing coaching will form part of the role.

Operations and Leadership

The successful candidate will oversee all company departments, including sales, service, warehouse, and administration. They will define clear expectations for each team, track performance, and address operational challenges as they arise. A key part of the role is ensuring the business runs smoothly and efficiently each day.

Safety and Compliance

The General Manager will ensure that all operations comply with applicable industry regulations, safety requirements, and company policies. This includes maintaining a safe workplace for employees and ensuring that all equipment sold or rented meets the required standards.

Sales and Customer Relations

The role will support the sales team in developing and maintaining strong customer relationships. This includes assisting with major account closures, resolving customer concerns, and ensuring clients receive excellent service at every stage of interaction. The General Manager will also help identify new business opportunities within the market.

Inventory and Supply Chain

The General Manager will work with warehouse and purchasing teams to ensure that the right equipment and parts are available when customers need them. They will also support supplier relationship management and assist with negotiating pricing and terms where needed.

Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Strong leadership capability with experience managing teams across several departments
  • Proficiency with standard business software, such as Microsoft Office and inventory or ERP systems
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a management or leadership position, preferably within the equipment, construction, or industrial sector
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make well-informed decisions under pressure
  • A proven history of meeting or exceeding sales and profitability objectives
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel locally when required
  • Strong understanding of business financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and profit and loss statements
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees, customers, and suppliers

Preferred Qualifications

Although not required, the following qualifications would help a candidate stand out:

  • Experience using CRM software to manage customer accounts and sales pipelines
  • Familiarity with equipment rental operations in addition to sales
  • Bilingual communication skills are an asset
  • Experience in the building equipment or heavy machinery industry
  • A bachelor's degree in business, operations management, or a related field
