Description
The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) in the College of Education and Human Development invites applications for an Open Rank Faculty position.
Examples of Duties
Teaching and Student Success
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Health, Physical Education and
Kinesiology.
- Develop, revise, and assess course content to ensure alignment with current disciplinary
standards and best practices.
- Utilize innovative teaching methods, instructional technologies, and evidence-based
pedagogical approaches.
- Maintain regular office hours and provide academic advising and mentoring to students.
- Supervise internships, practicum experiences, independent studies, theses, and
dissertations as appropriate.
- Evaluate student learning and provide timely feedback on assignments and assessments.
- Support student recruitment, retention, and graduation initiatives.
Research and Scholarly Activity
- Establish and maintain an active program of scholarly research.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and other scholarly outlets.
- Present scholarly work at regional, national, and international conferences.
- Pursue external funding opportunities through grants, contracts, and other sponsored
programs.
- Collaborate with faculty, students, and community partners on research initiatives.
- Involve undergraduate and graduate students in scholarly activities when appropriate.
Service and Leadership
- Participate in departmental, college, and university committees.
- Contribute to program assessment, accreditation, strategic planning, and continuous
improvement efforts.
- Assist with curriculum development, revision, and program evaluation.
- Support departmental recruitment, outreach, and community engagement activities.
- Participate in faculty governance and shared decision-making processes.
- Provide professional service to the discipline through leadership roles in professional organizations, editorial activities, conference participation, and peer review.
Community and Professional Engagement
- Develop partnerships with schools, healthcare organizations, community agencies, and
industry stakeholders.
- Promote community-based learning, service-learning, and experiential education
opportunities.
- Maintain professional credentials, certifications, and memberships relevant to the field.
- Engage in activities that enhance the visibility and reputation of the department and
university.
Additional Duties
- Maintain compliance with university policies, accreditation standards, and applicable regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Dean, or other designated administrator consistent with faculty rank and expertise.
Typical Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent terminal degree) in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sport Science, Physical Education, Human Performance, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated ability to teach on-campus undergraduate and/or graduate courses in kinesiology or related disciplines.
- Evidence of scholarly activity, research, or professional engagement appropriate to rank.
- Ability to advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Commitment to teaching excellence and student success.
- Ability to contribute to departmental, college, and university service activities.
- Experience using instructional technology and learning management systems.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in higher education.
- Record of peer-reviewed publications and scholarly presentations.
- Evidence of securing external funding, grants, or contracts.
- Experience directing student research projects, theses, or dissertations.
- Experience with online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced instruction.
- Professional certifications (e.g., ACSM, NSCA, NASM, ATC, CSCS).
- Experience with program assessment and accreditation processes.
- Experience in curriculum development and program review.
- Demonstrated success working with diverse student populations, including first generation and underrepresented students.
- Experience in academic leadership, committee work, or program coordination.
- Established regional, national, or international professional reputation.
- Experience developing partnerships with schools, healthcare organizations, community agencies, or industry partners.
