Job Summary

The School of Education invites applications for an open-rank faculty position in English Education and Secondary Literacy. This position responds to a critical need in the field as schools navigate evolving standards, emerging digital literacies, and persistent disparities in literacy learning and achievement. Hiring at an open rank will allow the School to recruit either an emerging or established scholar whose expertise will strengthen our teacher preparation programs, graduate offerings, and historically strong Literacy Studies program.

The successful candidate will contribute to scholarship that advances knowledge of English and literacy toward equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive literacy practices. They will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in English education, secondary literacy, and related areas of teacher learning and practice and will play a key role in preparing future educators to support diverse learners, including multilingual students. This position will also support continued program growth, partnerships with schools and communities, and sustainable teaching and mentoring capacity across undergraduate and graduate programs.

• Maintaining an active research agenda and corresponding publication record that demonstrates a compelling progression of scholarship.
• Engaging in strong teaching and mentoring and contributing to the School's teacher education, master's, and doctoral programs; advising undergraduate students; mentoring graduate students; and providing outreach and leadership to schools, districts, campus partners, professional organizations, and broader communities.
• Teaching undergraduate courses in English education and secondary literacy, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy studies, teacher learning and practice, and related areas of teacher education.
• Supporting the development of equitable, inclusive, culturally responsive, and evidence-based English education and literacy curricula that prepare educators to support diverse learners.
• Building and sustaining meaningful partnerships with local schools, districts, educators, and communities.
• Contributing service to the program, School, university, profession, and broader community, consistent with expectations for rank.

• The workload for this role is 40% research, scholarly, and creative work, 40% teaching, advising & mentoring, and 20% service.
• Tenure track faculty are expected to teach four courses per academic year, and all courses are typically taught in person on campus.

The salary range for this nine-month faculty role is $87,500 - $97,500 for Assistant Professor, $106,000 - $128,500 for Associate Professor, $131,500 - $165,000 for Professor, plus an $8,000 relocation allowance as applicable.

• Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in English education, literacy education, curriculum and instruction, teacher education, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
• A record of scholarly productivity-or demonstrated promise of such-in English education, secondary literacy, or a closely related field.
• Expertise in one or more areas of secondary literacy or English Education, for instance: adolescent literacies; digital and multimodal literacies; English and secondary literacy teacher learning; classroom literacy teaching and learning; culturally responsive and sustaining literacy practices; young adult literature; youth identities and literacies; and/or social and cultural contexts of literacy education.
• PK-12 teaching experience in U.S. schools, preferably in secondary English language arts or literacy.
• Evidence of effective teaching at the university level, at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
• A record of working successfully with people from a wide range of backgrounds and fostering a strong sense of community and belonging.
• Candidates seeking appointment at the associate or full professor level must demonstrate a record of teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate for appointment with tenure at the proposed rank.

• A research agenda focused on educational equity, justice, and access to high-quality literacy learning opportunities.
• Three or more years of PK-12 teaching experience in U.S. schools, preferably at the secondary level.
• Experience working with culturally, linguistically, socioeconomically diverse, and/or LGBTQ+ student populations in K-12 public schools in the U.S.
• Experience advancing inclusive, culturally responsive literacy practices.
• Experience developing partnerships with schools, districts, educators, or community-based organizations.
• Experience supporting teacher licensure programs.
• Experience mentoring graduate students as emerging researchers and teacher educators.
• Evidence of, or potential for, contributing to the growth and intellectual community of a graduate program in Literacy Studies.
