The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Department Chair at Central Carolina Community College provides leadership and oversight of the OTA program, including program development, assessment, planning, accreditation, and continuous improvement. The Department Chair ensures the curriculum remains current and relevant through ongoing evaluation and revision of course content, competencies, student learning outcomes, and teaching strategies and is responsible for the effective management of program personnel and resources. The Department Chair also serves as a faculty member who facilitates transformative lifelong learning.

  • This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after-hours may be required.

  • This position will be based in Lillington, NC and requires face-to-face teaching.

Salary depends on education and experience.

Associate Degree salary range: $63,657 - $74,522

Bachelors Degree salary range: $67,444 - $78,874

Master's Degree salary range: $70,804 - $81,947

Doctorate Degree salary range: $75,648 - $86,533

Essential Duties

Leadership/Management/Supervision:

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, supervise, and support faculty.

  • Determine faculty meet and maintain credentialing requirements.

  • Conduct annual performance appraisals for departmental personnel.

  • Promote professional development to ensure faculty stay current in their discipline and develop new skills.

  • Conduct regular departmental meetings and distribute information as appropriate.

  • Collaboratively evaluate departmental needs for program review, planning, and budgeting purposes.

  • Oversee departmental course schedule and faculty assignments with a focus on student demand.

  • Prepare annual departmental budget requests, incorporating needs assessment and estimated expenses.

  • Monitor departmental budget throughout the fiscal year, communicating allocations, transferring funds as necessary, and alerting your supervisor to any concerns.

  • Update academic dean and associate vice president, as applicable, regarding departmental concerns.

  • Ensure the department maintains accurate records and submits timely reports and contracts.

Curriculum/Program Coordination:

  • Establish and maintain an active advisory board and relationships with business, industry, professional agencies, educational partners, and other community stakeholders to support program development, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

  • Plan and develop instructional and laboratory spaces and identify and secure the faculty, staff, equipment, technology, materials, and other resources necessary to establish and operate the program.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain curriculum in accordance with accreditation standards and contemporary practice, ensuring quality and consistency of instruction.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate program and student learning outcomes and use assessment results to support strategic planning and continuous program improvement.

  • Develop and oversee processes for proficiency exams.

  • Oversee the evaluation and selection of course materials, and prepare and submit textbook orders to the bookstore manager, as applicable.

  • Develop the course schedule, assign faculty, and collaborate with other departments to ensure course offerings meet student and program needs.

  • Collaborate with college stakeholders to plan and implement activities with high school and four-year partners, as applicable.

  • Collaborate with appropriate Continuing Education personnel on the development of credit and non-credit courses, creation of course outlines, and assignment of faculty as needed.

  • Collaborate with the library to ensure that an adequate quantity of up-to-date library materials are available.

  • Provide program-level oversight and collaborate with the appropriate clinical or fieldwork coordinator to ensure experiential education supports the curriculum and meets applicable accreditation requirements.

  • Lead the program through initial accreditation and maintain ongoing compliance, including remaining current with accreditation standards and policies and coordinating required accreditation materials, reports, and timelines.

  • Develop and implement strategies to support student recruitment, retention, progression, and success.

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Embrace the institutional goals of Central Carolina Community College by engaging students as full partners in the learning process, removing barriers to student progression in courses, and supporting and assisting students in achieving their educational and career goals.

  • Use student learning outcomes to create a variety of activities, assignments, and assessments to ensure curriculum goals are met.

  • Create a dynamic instructional environment that promotes a positive, interactive, and inclusive learning experience for all students.

  • Maintain an online course shell with a syllabus and gradebook in the LMS for each class.

  • Grade all assignments in a timely manner and ensure that all grades are reported within the 10-day college grading policy.

  • Provide personalized and constructive feedback on student assignments by recognizing what students did well and identifying attainable improvements for future work.

  • Respond to all student communication within two business days.

  • Report attendance weekly.

  • Facilitate student learning for instructional loads of 12-15 contact hours per semester.

  • Faculty keep a weekly schedule of 35 hours on campus, including 5 required office hours. Hours on site may be adjusted based on distance education responsibilities and/or approved telework arrangements.

  • Maintain a flexible teaching schedule that includes seated classes in the daytime, and may include evenings and Saturdays.

  • Actively support the college's vision of being the college of choice for students, workforce partners, community leaders, and employees.

Advising Responsibilities:

  • Meet with each assigned advisee a minimum of once each semester.

  • Provide advisees with information and guidance to achieve their individual educational, career, and life goals.

  • Help students develop educational plans.

  • Coach advisees and refer them to institutional resources when academic or personal problems require intervention.

  • Complete faculty advisor training and ensure departmental faculty do as well.

Institutional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in activities required to maintain program and/or college accreditation standards.

  • Serve on college committees as appointed.

  • Attend advisory board meetings as requested by your supervisor.

  • Attend graduation ceremonies.

  • Maintain current knowledge of your discipline by engaging in relevant professional development and renewing industry credentials, as needed.

  • Attend departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings.

  • Assume other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Required educational background:

  • Hold a minimum of a masters degree from an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized institutional accrediting agency.

Required work experience:

  • Have at least five years of documented experience in the field of occupational therapy, including:

  • Clinical practice experience as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant.

  • Administrative experience including, but not limited to, program planning and implementation, personnel management, evaluation, and budgeting.

  • Scholarship (e.g., scholarship of application, scholarship of teaching and learning).

  • Understanding of and experience with occupational therapy assistants.

  • 3 years of experience as a faculty member with teaching responsibilities at the postsecondary level.

Required License and Certification:

  • Be an initially certified Occupational Therapist (OT) or Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA).

  • Be currently licensed in the state of North Carolina.

Preferred Requirements

  • Two years' experience teaching at a community college.

  • Bilingual proficiency.
