Primary Objectives:
The Nursing Lab Supervisor oversees the safe and effective use of the nursing and simulation laboratory environments, supplies and equipment, which are required to meet the course and program learning outcomes of the Nursing and Allied Health programs. This individual supervises Nursing Laboratory Coordinators and Student Aides and reports directly to the Nursing Department Director.
Laboratory Supervision
Oversee all activities in the Nursing Simulation and Learning Laboratories
Oversee the schedule for all lab rooms for use by Nursing.
Coordinate with Allied Health and WFD for laboratory room access.
Prioritize daily workflow and adjust as needed while ensuring learning needs are met.
Collaborate with faculty to plan and prepare instructional activities, supplies, and equipment necessary to meet course learning objectives.
Maintain, prepare, and distribute equipment and supplies for faculty-led activities and student practice sessions.
Provide guidance to nursing students when they are practicing skills independently in the labs (as specified by faculty and according to curricular standards). Plan and communicate laboratory practice hours to faculty and students and post appointment times using scheduling application. Maintain records and schedules of practice sessions and utilization of laboratory hours. Collaborate with Information Systems and Audiovisual departments in the set-up and use of their technologies in the lab rooms.
Manage Inventory (Supplies/Equipment) and Utilization
Coordinate schedule with lab coordinators to ensure adequate staff support for students and faculty
Work closely with Lab Coordinators in all areas of lab preparation and clean-up to maintain orderliness of the labs
Train student aides in proper lab procedures, and use of equipment use and supplies
Manage Inventory (Supplies/Equipment) and Utilization
Maintain adequate par levels of laboratory supplies for all learning activities.
Document and maintain accurate inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
Maintain a current directory (item and location) of all Nursing Learning Laboratory and Simulation Laboratory inventory in the department shared drive.
Complete the college's annual inventory of lab equipment and retain records for the department. Dispose of old or surplus equipment according to college policies
Recommend and obtain quotes for capital equipment and supply purchases, including Perkins funded items, for utilization in the Nursing Laboratory.
Collaborate with the Nursing Director to manage the capital and operating budget for the Nursing Learning Laboratory and Simulation Laboratory.
Prepare monthly reports on the utilization of the Nursing Learning Laboratory and Simulation Laboratory for the department meetings, and semester summary reports for the Director and department.
Oversee Simulation Activities
Coordinate use of shared HPNSs and associated equipment for Nursing and Allied Health programs.
Ensure annual maintenance, safe storage, and appropriate utilization of the HPNSs.
Trouble-shoot simulator problems, make minor repairs or coordinate repairs with equipment vendors Schedule repairs as needed.
Assist students and faculty in utilizing patient simulators during leaning activities. Coordinate and schedule training on simulators as needed for faculty.
Safety
Safety Maintain safe laboratory environment for participating students and faculty according to industry and college standards. Coordinate laboratory room maintenance and repairs with Plant Maintenance as needed Provide orientation to policies procedures, location and function of equipment and supplies, and safe operation of equipment for all participants in lab activities. Trouble-shoot equipment problems, make minor repairs or coordinate repairs with equipment vendors Control the security of the laboratories, equipment, and instructional supplies Ensure safe storage and coordinate annual disposal of hazardous materials and equipment (for example, sharps). Obtain and maintain proficiency in operating equipment safely and according to industry standards. Examples include, but are not limited to, IV pumps, HPSs, manikins, ventilators, defibrillator, and patient monitoring devices. Document continuing education related to current technical and educational practices.
Support
Support program enrollment and development initiatives by presenting nursing lab and equipment as requested. This includes but is not limited to lab tours and HPS demonstrations during department information sessions, open houses, other college and department activities, and administrative tours. Hire and supervise student aides including timesheets and records Ensure Nursing Laboratory's bulletin board is maintained in a current and appropriate state. Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Director.
