Job Description:

We have an opening for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Floating School Nurse for the upcoming school year. This position provides nursing coverage throughout the district when a school nurse is absent and serves as an additional nursing resource at a designated school when district-wide coverage is not needed. Reports To: Building Principal, Nursing Supervisor & Director, Special Services

Start Date: September 2026 (start of 2026-2027 school year)

Compensation: $54,309-$67,630 (Full-Time annual)

Work Schedule: 8:00am - 3:30pm (188 days)

Application Date: Position will remain open until filled

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the districts floating school nurse by providing nursing coverage in any Wethersfield Public School when the assigned school nurse is absent.
  • When substitute coverage is not required, report to a designated school to provide additional nursing support and assist with the daily operation of the health office.
  • Provide direct nursing care to students within the Connecticut Licensed Practical Nurse scope of practice.
  • Assess students presenting with illness or injury and provide appropriate first aid, nursing care, and emergency response, referring to the Registered Nurse or emergency medical services as appropriate.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, district policies, and Connecticut regulations.
  • Monitor students with chronic health conditions and individualized healthcare plans, documenting observations and communicating concerns to the Registered Nurse and appropriate staff.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate, confidential, and organized student health records in compliance with state regulations and Board of Education policies.
  • Support compliance with Connecticut-mandated immunization requirements, physical examinations, and health screenings.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, school staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies regarding student health needs.
  • Assist in implementing Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), Section 504 accommodations, and other health-related supports as directed.
  • Promote a safe and healthy school environment through health education, infection prevention, and student wellness initiatives.
  • Maintain medical supplies, equipment, and the health office in a clean, organized, and compliant manner.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development activities, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Current Connecticut Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing.
  • Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience preferred, with experience in pediatrics, school nursing, family practice, or community health preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medication administration, chronic health conditions affecting school-aged children, and emergency nursing procedures.
  • Ability to travel between schools within the district as needed.
  • Ability to meet all requirements necessary to perform nursing duties in a school setting.
