Sutter Medical Group (SMG) seeks to hire a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our growing Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgical Oncology team in Sacramento, CA & Roseville, CA
Our HPB Surgical Oncology program is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to partner with our HPB Surgical Oncologist in delivering comprehensive care to patients with complex liver, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, and other surgical oncology diagnoses. This role provides a unique opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the patient care continuum, including outpatient evaluation and management, perioperative care, inpatient rounding, multidisciplinary oncology care, and surgical first-assist opportunities.
The successful candidate will join a well-established, multidisciplinary surgical oncology program committed to excellence in patient care, quality improvement, education, and innovation. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys managing complex surgical patients, working closely with physicians and residents, and practicing at the top of their license within a collaborative academic environment.
Position Highlights
Key Responsibilities
Outpatient Clinic Care
Conduct new patient consultations and follow-up visits for:
Pancreatic tumors and malignancies
Primary and metastatic liver tumors
Biliary tract cancers
Gastrointestinal malignancies
Melanoma, sarcoma, and other surgical oncology diagnoses as needed
Obtain comprehensive histories and perform physical examinations
Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising surgeon
Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment options, surgical procedures, and postoperative expectations
Coordinate care with medical oncology, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, pathology, and primary care providers
Diagnostic & Treatment Management
Review and interpret:
CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, and ultrasound imaging
Laboratory results and tumor markers
Pathology and cytology reports
Assist with preoperative evaluation and surgical planning
Manage referrals, diagnostic workups, and surveillance programs
Evaluate and manage treatment-related symptoms and postoperative concerns
Perioperative & Inpatient Responsibilities
Surgical First Assist Responsibilities
Serve as first or second assist for a variety of surgical oncology procedures, including:
Pancreatic resections
Liver resections
Biliary surgery
Minimally invasive and robotic procedures
Other surgical oncology operations as appropriate
Assist with patient positioning, exposure, tissue handling, wound closure, and intraoperative decision support
Participate in perioperative management and postoperative recovery planning
Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Program Development
Requirements
Graduate from an accredited NP or PA program with appropriate national certification (e.g., AANP, ANCC, NCCPA).
California licensure eligibility and clearances (NP/PA licensure required).
Prior experience in surgical oncology is preferred.
Exceptional communication skills, comfortable working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment including patient/family interactions.
