Position Overview
An experienced Labor and Delivery nursing leader is sought to oversee clinical and operational performance within a high-volume maternal care environment. This position provides leadership across Labor and Delivery, OB Emergency services, and obstetric operating room functions while supporting a diverse patient population and multidisciplinary care team.
The Nurse Manager is accountable for safe, high-quality patient care, staff development and retention, operational performance, quality improvement, and the overall patient and caregiver experience. The role works closely with senior nursing leadership, clinical supervisors, educators, providers, and other healthcare professionals.
The department manages approximately 550-600 births each month and provides care beginning at approximately 22-23 weeks gestation. The multidisciplinary environment includes Maternal-Fetal Medicine, midwifery, obstetrics, family medicine, anesthesia, laborist, neonatology, doula services, cultural navigators, and specialized addiction recovery support for pregnant and postpartum patients.
Key Responsibilities- Provide leadership and operational oversight for Labor and Delivery and associated maternal care services.
- Maintain accountability for patient care operations and appropriate clinical coverage 24 hours a day.
- Coordinate daily care delivery with nursing staff, providers, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ensure nursing practice meets professional, regulatory, clinical, and organizational standards.
- Establish, implement, and monitor nursing practice and patient-care standards.
- Develop unit-level goals and quality improvement initiatives that support safe, evidence-based care.
- Monitor quality outcomes and implement corrective action when performance gaps are identified.
- Oversee appropriate patient assignments and evaluate patient care and patient/family satisfaction through rounding and direct intervention when needed.
- Serve as a patient advocate and help address ethical, legal, and culturally sensitive care considerations.
- Monitor staff retention and turnover and implement strategies that strengthen engagement and workforce stability.
- Maintain clinical awareness by spending time across shifts, assisting with patient care when appropriate, and coaching and developing staff.
- Collaborate with clinical education and specialist partners to identify and implement educational programs for team members at all experience levels.
- Participate in employee relations matters, including applicable grievance processes.
- Partner with leadership on staffing, financial performance, quality outcomes, and patient and caregiver experience.
- Support recruitment and selection of experienced nurses, temporary clinical staff, and candidates entering Labor and Delivery residency or fellowship pathways.
- Advance evidence-based practice initiatives in partnership with clinical specialists, perinatal educators, and frontline nursing staff.
- Support continued improvement of maternal quality metrics, including NTSV cesarean delivery performance.
- Promote an inclusive care and workplace culture and support programs designed to improve culturally responsive maternity care.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program, or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a commitment to complete a BSN within two years of hire.
- Active Washington State Registered Nurse license upon hire.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
- At least 3 years of recent Labor and Delivery nursing experience.
- Nursing leadership experience sufficient to effectively oversee staff and clinical operations.
Preferred Qualifications- Master's degree in Nursing or a related field.
- At least 1 year of first-line nursing management experience.
- Charge nurse, supervisory, or management experience within Labor and Delivery is strongly preferred.
