Position Summary:
The Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse with 24-hour accountability for the leadership, operations, and performance of one or more defined patient care areas. This position provides leadership and direction to Registered Nurses and other healthcare professionals responsible for the delivery of patient care.
Key areas of accountability include:
Leading the planning, organization, and delivery of nursing care within the assigned area.
Recruiting, developing, engaging, and retaining a high-performing team.
Managing team member performance, professional development, and succession planning.
Managing staffing, scheduling, budgets, and departmental resources.
Monitoring and improving quality, safety, patient experience, and operational outcomes.
Translating organizational priorities into clear goals and expectations for the department.
Building collaborative relationships with physicians, interdisciplinary partners, and organizational leaders.
Key Responsibilities
Nursing Leadership & Operations
Provides 24-hour leadership and operational accountability for the assigned patient care area.
Plans, organizes, and directs nursing services to support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
Establishes departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectations.
Maintains appropriate staffing levels based on patient needs, workload, and established staffing plans.
Oversees scheduling and deployment of nursing and support resources.
Identifies operational barriers and implements solutions to improve workflow, efficiency, and patient care delivery.
Leads implementation of new processes, technologies, workflows, and care delivery models.
Maintains knowledge of current nursing practice, healthcare trends, and innovations relevant to the assigned area.
Team Leadership, Recruitment & Retention
Recruits, interviews, selects, and onboards qualified team members.
Creates an environment that supports team member engagement, retention, accountability, and professional growth.
Provides ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance management.
Completes performance evaluations and establishes clear expectations for individual and team performance.
Identifies opportunities for education, development, and advancement.
Mentors emerging clinical and operational leaders and supports succession planning.
Monitors team engagement and retention trends and develops action plans based on identified opportunities.
Recognizes individual strengths and effectively utilizes team members' skills and expertise.
Quality & Performance Improvement
Establishes and monitors quality, safety, and performance improvement goals for the assigned area.
Uses data and performance metrics to identify trends, opportunities, and areas requiring intervention.
Leads improvement initiatives and evaluates outcomes to determine effectiveness.
Analyzes root causes and performance variation and develops appropriate corrective strategies.
Incorporates evidence-based practice into nursing standards, workflows, and patient care delivery.
Ensures departmental practices meet applicable nursing, regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards.
Partners with clinical and operational leaders to improve patient outcomes and overall department performance.
Financial & Resource Management
Manages departmental expenses within established operating and staffing budgets.
Participates in development of annual operating and capital budgets.
Reviews financial and staffing variances and develops action plans as appropriate.
Evaluates staffing, productivity, and resource utilization to support departmental performance.
Demonstrates an understanding of the financial impact of operational and patient care decisions.
Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining quality and patient care standards.
Physician & Interdisciplinary Partnership
Builds effective working relationships with physicians, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary partners.
Collaborates with medical staff leadership to evaluate patient care needs, services, workflows, and clinical practices.
Facilitates communication between nursing, physicians, and other departments to support coordinated patient care.
Engages team members and key stakeholders in problem-solving and improvement initiatives.
Promotes shared decision-making and team member involvement in decisions affecting patient care and departmental operations.
Serves as a key nursing leadership resource for issues affecting the assigned patient care area.
Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness
Provides clear strategic and operational direction for the assigned department.
Translates organizational priorities into actionable departmental goals.
Makes timely, well-informed decisions and appropriately escalates complex issues.
Leads teams through change and supports successful implementation of new initiatives.
Communicates expectations, decisions, and performance goals effectively across all levels of the department.
Anticipates emerging operational or clinical needs and develops proactive solutions.
Collaborates across departments to address issues that impact patient care, team members, or organizational performance.
Position Qualification:
Education
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Master's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or a related field preferred.
If a Master's degree has not been completed at the time of hire, enrollment in an approved Master's program must begin within two years of hire.
Experience
Minimum of three years of Registered Nurse experience required.
Proven leadership and organizational skills required.
Endoscopy experience preferred.
Previous nursing leadership or management experience preferred.
Equivalent combinations of relevant education, training, and experience may be considered as appropriate.
Licensure & Certification
Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Tennessee or valid Multi-State Compact RN license required.
ACLS, NRP, PALS, and/or other certifications may be required based on the assigned patient care area.
