    Job Description:

    • TITLE: School Nurse

    REPORTS TO: Building Principal & School Nurse Supervisor

    Qualifications:

    1. Bachelors degree desired but not required.

    2. Registered professional nurse with current Connecticut licensure.

    3. Educational requirements as per State of Connecticut statutes §10-212-2.

    Duties:1. Participates as a member of school-based Child Study and Planning & Placement Teams - as appropriate.

    1. As a member of these interdisciplinary teams, helps to minimize the impact of health impairments on learning by assisting in the identification, assessment, and planning for student care needs.

    2. Collaborates with staff and parents to facilitate a better understanding of how a childs health needs may impact on their educational plan.

    3. Helps to foster tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity in the school community. 1. Assures optimal wellness of individuals by use of the nursing process in all interventions by assessments, planning, and interpretation of data in the educational environment.

    4. Performs all health screenings as required by State statutes and as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.

    5. Communicates and collaborates with community providers of services for children.

    6. Coordinates health care needs of students in the school setting.

    7. Maintains standards of school nursing practice which includes collection of data, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, triage, and delegation.

    8. Supports children as they learn to advocate for themselves.

    9. Assists with the education of staff, students, and families with respect to health care.

    Other duties (Contd):1. Is available as a consultant to parents, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate staff to discuss issues around health-related concerns.

    1. Utilizes a solid knowledge base and skill in the understanding of human growth and development of children and adolescents. 1. Writes and maintains cumulative health record for each student, health office records, monthly statistics, and other reports and documentation consistent with nursing care/individualized health care plans/IEPs and Federal, State, and local mandates. 1. Attends and participates in professional development programs and demonstrates willingness to update skills and practice.
    • Implements and upholds the school health policies of the East Haddam School System as set forth by its Board of Education and required by the State of Connecticut.
    • Operates the school health office in a professional, competent, and confidential manner; pursuant to State statutes.

    • Participates in monitoring the quality and appropriateness of care.

    • Coordinates and plans school programs with appropriate personnel. (CPR, kindergarten registration, athletic physicals, etc.).
    • Other pertinent responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
