Description (summary of duties)

Merrill Area Public Schools is seeking a full-time custodial position. The preferred individual will be able to work independently, stay self-motivated, follow district cleaning processes and protocols, help in additional areas as needed, and have an attitude that supports a positive working environment. The ideal candidate will also have a demeanor that is pleasant and can interact positively with children of all ages. This position will be eligible for benefits including health, dental, life, and LTD insurance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties as assigned):

  • This position will likely be 2nd or 3rd shift. The duties include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Keeping buildings and premises clean and safe
  • Vacuuming, mopping and general cleaning practices
  • Emptying trash and recyclable bins
  • Disinfecting tables, desks, restrooms, etc.
  • Assisting building staff with lifting (up to 60 pounds)
  • Performing basic maintenance, minor repairs, and cleaning duties
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Snow removal, sand and salt application
  • Assisting with set-up for events in the fieldhouse and auditorium
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk for the duration of an 8-hour shift. Must be able to traverse stairs, hallways, and large outdoor areas repeatedly.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. regularly (e.g., loaded mop buckets, furniture, trash bags) and up to 75-100 lbs. occasionally with assistance.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching overhead. Must be able to operate heavy machinery such as floor scrubbers, buffers, and snowblowers.
  • Capacity to work in varying weather conditions (snow removal/groundskeeping) and tolerate exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, and high-noise levels.
  • Ability to safely climb and work from ladders (up to 10-12 feet) to change light bulbs, clean windows, or perform minor repairs.
  • Proficiency in handling and mixing cleaning chemicals according to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and following bloodborne pathogen protocols for biohazard cleanup.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical equipment. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud.
