JOB TITLE: NGS Bioinformatics Support Specialist

SUMMARY
Theoris is assisting our client in their search for an NGS Bioinformatics Support Specialist. This role will provide expert system support to enable biotherapeutic discovery projects and project management support to bring appropriate controls to the continuous development and improvement of the system.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
  • Establish and/or ensure adherence to tracking methods for the status of scientific projects, new requests & features, tasks & milestones, and other project management material in support of reporting, value articulation and visibility of responsiveness.
  • Work with project managers and technical teams to implement and enforce these tracking mechanisms.
  • Become an expert of the user-facing system and its upstream and downstream dependencies.
  • Provide “white glove service” to users on both standard sequence workflows and ad-hoc analyses, including sequence annotation, clustering, germlining, enrichment analysis, and more.
  • Understand  discovery processes to effectively assist scientists.
  • Develop and execute test plans to ensure product quality.
  • Generate test data and document test results.
  • Develop user guides, requirements, training videos, etc. Keep them up to date.
  • Retrieve assay data from databases or directly from scientists.
  • Apply normalization and various aggregation to the data.
  • Pivot the data into multiple formats required for downstream analyses.
  • Analyze historical NGS data (e.g. V-gene usage) to understand data behavior and impact on projects.
  • Propose better thresholds and/or methods based on detailed evaluations.
  • Provide on-demand data analyses as part of white glove service to answer scientific questions.
  • Develop reusable NGS analyses in Claude or Jupyter Notebook, such as post-processing of ENPICOM results.
  • Create a dashboard to monitor system metrics and health, including system usage, project count, contamination rate, and unfinished projects. Proactively detect anomalies and send alerts.
  • Create packages using ENPICOM API and SDK to automate common use cases.
  • Become expert on ENPICOM API/SDK and use them to address cases not easily solved by the GUI.
  • Integrate our system with upstream metadata providers and downstream data repositories as part of an automated cohesive data ecosystem.
  • Clearly define integration requirements and bring discipline to the team to adhere to the specs (e.g. need awareness before making changes).
  • Utilize AI to streamline user support, documentation, issue tracking, reporting, etc.
 
 

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or MS in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Hybrid work: 3 days onsite in San Diego + 2 days remote.
  • B cell biology, antibody discovery, immunization and library-based discovery, protein engineering, molecular biology, NGS sample prep, Illumina MiSeq, high-throughput antibody screening.
  • Python, NGS data analysis (preferably BCR/TCR), Claude, Github, Unix, Bash, API, dashboard apps (Plotly/Dash, Streamlit, Spotfire, Tableau, R Shiny), Scientific data analysis (normalization, multi-point analysis, etc), AWS, Jupyter, Docker
  • AI-assisted project management, system administration, scientific user support, requirements gathering, software testing (unit/integration/regression), documentation (requirements & processes), support ticket management, Agile methodology.
