    Purpose of Position:

    The New Business Underwriter is responsible for reviewing new business cases and ensuring all requirements are met by following all Choice programs underwriting guidelines.

    Essential

    Functions

    • Uphold company policies and procedures as they apply to Choice Administrators programs.
    • Underwrite new cases to determine that all submission requirements are received, and all underwriting guidelines are upheld.
    • Complete underwriting checklist in system.
    • Ensure missing information is received in writing and by the specified deadline.
    • Complete any missing data entry based on additional information received.
    • Communicate with Brokers and/or General Agencies via telephone or email regarding case status.
    • Log case progress in the Underwriting Turnaround Tool in the department's SharePoint site.
    • Ensure all approved cases are sent for quality control.
    • Complete case audits.
    • Move all approved cases to corresponding iManage folder.
    • Send notification of approved groups to GPC or COBRA.
    • Document calls in appropriate system for historical purposes and ease of access by other teams.
    • Assist with updating forms, letters, and manuals as assigned.
    • Must be able to test new programming as needed.
    • Staying up to date on current industry changes and regulations.
    • On-Site and/or remote regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
    • Performs other business tasks or functions as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

    • Must have a firm understanding of the underwriting process.
    • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially under pressure.
    • Ability to handle irate customers in a courteous, patient, calm and positive manner while maintaining a high quality of work.
    • Must be computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
    • Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment where deadlines are a priority and handling multiple assignments simultaneously is the norm.
    • Must be able to understand and follow directions.
    • Must be a team player and participate in a close team-oriented environment.
    • Must be able to schedule time to complete miscellaneous projects as assigned.
    • Must be able to test new programming as needed.
    • Must be able to pay attention to detail.
    • Must possess a basic understanding of and ability to follow New Business Underwriting procedures and protocols.
    • Must have a willingness to ask questions and seek clarification.
    • Must be open to learning and personal growth.
    • Must complete at least 5 audits per month.
    • Must underwrite 90-100% of the monthly average of members and cases.

    Educational Requirements:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

    Physical Requirements:

    Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and occasional standing and walking. Must have adequate hearing for phone work. Vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Must be able to use a keyboard and other office equipment. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally.
