Description

Summary:

Upward Bound Math/Science (UBMS) Project Advisor/Education Specialist works directly with students in assessing their academic skills and designing individualized academic plans to prepare the students for academic success in college. The advisor also serves as a part of the UBMS professional team and helps plan and deliver leadership, career, college preparatory and cultural enrichment events, and activities that help to prepare UBMS participants to succeed in college.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and monitor UBMS student participants.
  • Work intensively with their families to help the students attain success through high school.
  • Prepare students for entry into post-secondary education.
  • Provide project services at office location and school sites.
  • Assist with participant assessments, orientation workshops to determine the extent of academic, personal, and career counseling needs.
  • Academic advising (individual and small group) sessions and documenting all advising interactions.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

Minimum: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university; two years related experience including the use of technology to accomplish job tasks; commitment to the advancement of socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged individuals. Experience working with low-income, first-generation students who have an academic need.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Assist with student interviews and prospective students and give advice regarding application process, program requirements, course requirements, etc.
  • Assist with monitoring students' attendance, behavior, grades, test scores, and credits earned; implement improvement strategies and action plans.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and project files.
  • Assess family needs; make appropriate referrals and linkages for family support and prevention services.
  • Keep a regular schedule for home visits with UBMS families to build trusting relationships with students and families.
  • Assist in the design and implement (with the director) of after-school and summer programming.
  • Demonstrate personal support for individual students, e.g., phone calls, notes, and personal contact during school vacations, etc.
  • Maintain a congenial, supportive, and accepting approach when collaborating with participants.
  • Provide academic advising for students; resolve individual admission problems with students and staff.
  • Participate in staff development and in-service training meetings.
  • Serve on Agency committees as appointed.
  • Refer students to counselors, tutors, or external agencies as appropriate.
  • Receive supervision from the UBMS Coordinator as directed by the Project Director.
  • Other duties assigned to meet UBMS program requirements.
