Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring for Motor Equipment Operator II positions to perform a variety of duties and maintenance tasks associated with the Beach Operations group, such as:
Operating various types of equipment such as Tractor, Beach Groomer, Loader, Four-Wheel Drive Beach Truck, Packer Truck, Mad Vacuum, Sweeper, and Skid Steer – as well as various power tools
Clean up litter, trash, and debris on beaches, the boardwalk, and Atlantic Avenue
Sand removal and grading
Set up and take down for special events
Removal of dead sea life from beaches
Trimming/weed eating and maintaining sand fences/split rails in public accesses
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
An ideal candidate:
Will have experience with landscaping or refuse collection.
Work Schedule:
5:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday-Friday during the off-season
5:30 am to 2:00 pm. From April 1st to November 1st, the work schedule will be seven days a week
Hours may vary to meet Resort/Sandbridge and Special Event needs.

Position requires a Commercial Driver's License– Class A or B
CDL Hiring Bonus –
Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
$1,000 with first paycheck
$1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
$2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
This position is ALPHA 1 and may require work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Requires completion of the tenth grade, plus two (2) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.Skills:
