Beacon Breaks Ground on New Memorial Hospital Patient Tower

In October 2022, Beacon Health System leaders broke ground on the new 10-story patient care tower on the campus of Memorial Hospital of South Bend. This transformational, once-in-a-generation project is designed to enrich the patient, family and visitor experience while meeting the growing healthcare needs of residents in our area for decades to come.

Summary

Reports to the Director, Diagnostic Imaging. Provides functional guidance to Technologists and students in assigned area. Regularly performs a variety of routine and complex imaging procedures as a staff Technologist.

Coordinates the patient care activities of, and provides functional guidance to, Technologists and students in assigned area by:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day patient care activities by ensuring adequate staffing. Scheduling, planning and assigning duties of staff Technologists to meet patient care requirements and conducting staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Working in cooperation with other Coordinators to assist and direct the staff Technologists in completing all required work appropriately and in a timely and orderly manner.
  • Ensuring the quality of diagnostic imaging procedures by utilizing equipment, other available resources, techniques and protocols to identify problems and evaluate services. Also taking appropriate corrective action to resolve problems.
  • Assisting departmental management in interviewing, hiring, orienting, coaching, conducting performance appraisals, training and counseling Technologists.
  • Instructing all subordinate personnel in safe radiation practices regarding both patients and personnel.
  • Overseeing and ensuring proper treatment of patients while in the department; also assisting with the completion of incident reports on any injuries sustained in the department.
  • Monitoring and reporting operational and functional instrumentation problems and any equipment in need of repair to the appropriate personnel; also recommending the purchase of new equipment and the maintenance of existing equipment and ensuring an adequate inventory of supplies.
  • Instructing students and new staff members in clinical imaging procedures and serving as a resource to staff Technologists; also working with the Clinical Instructor and department management to develop in-service educational programs as needed.

Participates in departmental management activities and supports the management team by:

  • Acting as a role model by complying with policies, procedures and practices related to departmental operations.
  • Attending management staff meetings as directed.
  • Recommending, and assisting with the implementation of, departmental policies and procedures.
  • Providing input into the budgeting and capital equipment planning process.
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of Quality Assurance programs to ensure compliance with Joint Commission (JCAHO), NRC and other regulatory agencies, as well as to safeguard patients, personnel and equipment.
  • Regularly performing a variety of routine and complex diagnostic imaging procedures as a staff Technologist.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing job-related assignments and special projects as directed.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience:

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associate''s Degree or equivalent from an approved school of radiology, nuclear medicine or ultrasound. Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or registered in ultrasound, physics or similar governing agencies is required. Demonstrated leadership skills are preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of radiation emitting units.
  • Requires the analytical ability/skills necessary to determine the best method of providing requested radiographs based on specifics of individual cases, ensuring clear and undistorted pictures and providing technical advice on improving film quality.
  • Requires the ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to fifty percent of work time when positioning patients for procedures, operating diagnostic imaging equipment, reviewing images taken by staff Technologists, etc.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical or emotional stress, department staff and various other Hospital staff (for example, with nursing personnel and/or physicians when gathering and exchanging routine patient information).
  • Demonstrates the leadership and training skills necessary to provide functional guidance and training to Technologists and students in the assigned area(s).

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a patient care environment with some exposure to possible infectious diseases.
  • Regular exposure to radiation with little or no chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed.

Physical Demands:

Requires the physical ability and stamina - - i.e., to lift and position patients (for up to 20% of work time); stand and/or walk (for up to 80% of work time) when taking x-rays and delivering films; reach, bend, stoop, twist, etc. - - to perform the essential functions of the position.
