Mobile Railcar Repair Coordinator

Position Summary

The Mobile Railcar Repair Coordinator is responsible for organizing, dispatching, and overseeing on-site repair and maintenance activities for railcars at customer locations, sidings, yards, and interchange points. This role acts as the central point of contact between mobile repair crews, customers, railroads, and internal operations, ensuring repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with AAR (Association of American Railroads) rules and FRA regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Schedule and dispatch mobile repair technicians to railcar service locations based on priority, location, and crew availability
• Coordinate with customers, railroads, and yard personnel to arrange site access, track time, and safe working conditions
• Review railcar defect reports (e.g., FRA Blue Card, bad-order tags, AAR interchange rules) to determine scope of repair and parts needed
• Track repair status in real time and communicate updates to customers, dispatch, and management
• Ensure mobile crews have necessary parts, tools, and equipment before dispatch; coordinate parts procurement and delivery to remote sites
• Monitor crew certifications, training compliance, and safety documentation
• Respond to service escalations and emergency bad-order situations, reprioritizing crews as needed
• Support invoicing and billing accuracy by documenting completed work orders
• Enforce safety protocols including blue flag/blue signal protection, lockout/tagout, and PPE compliance for field crews

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certification in mechanical, railroad, or logistics field preferred
• 2+ years of experience in railcar repair, freight rail operations, fleet maintenance, or mobile field service coordination
• Working knowledge of AAR interchange rules, FRA regulations, and railcar mechanical systems (couplers, brakes, trucks/wheelsets, draft gear)
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills to manage multiple simultaneous repair jobs across a region
• Excellent communication skills for coordinating between customers, crews, and internal teams
• Proficiency with Excel, Smart sheets, and Microsoft Office
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record; willingness to travel within assigned territory
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call rotations for emergency repairs

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience as a car inspector, mechanical foreman, or field service technician in the rail industry
• Familiarity with railcar billing/repair systems (e.g., RailInc, Umler, Total Car Management)
• Knowledge of hazmat handling and placarding requirements
